Redfield 3200 mounting

I ran across a strange set of instructions in a 1971 Redfield catalog on the 3200 scope pages. First let me say I am mounting a 3200 on a Remington 700 short action in .222. I have what is listed as the correct Redfield big bore block set for the short action. The blocks are not at the same height one is higher than the other. One block is on the receiver ring and the other is on the barrel where the original sight was. The redfield instructions say--"For rifles with non standard receiver ring diameters , the front mount should be approximately .050 inch lower than the rear base for mid-range and .065 for long range" How can this be done with the fixed mounting system of the 3200 scope??? One would assume the bases should be level with each other so the rings do not try to pinch the scope. It would not be a problem with a Lyman or Unertl type sliding 3 point mount, but the 3200 is fixed solid like a normal scope and the two mounts should align or lt least that is what common sense dictates. Of course I could be looking at this all wrong--but??
Does anyone have the mounting instructions or manual for the 3200 that I could get a copy of??

All they are saying is the scope must be "tilted" downward for additional distance. There is relativly no strain on the rings or the scope.

Before you screw the rings down mount a bar same size as the scope see what happens. I use a Sinclar precision ground scope mounting bar but no reason a piece of wood or pipe won't do the same thing and show up any misalignment without messing up the scope body.

You can move up or down some with no problems, too much will put a strain on the scope.

I had a similiar situation on my martini going from 100 t0 200 yds. I ran a big flat norton stone across the top of the basesto get them on the same plane. You might want to find a modern receiver mounted scope for the bolt gun. My 700 varmint and 40X also have both sets of holes. I have a Remington scope I use on them. I am of the opinion the fewer things you have attached to the barrel the better the gun will shoot. You can also shim the bases to get them inline. A good straightedge is helpfull.

Agree with screw-loose on this one that action is much better off with a modern scope.  Or if it's a old Remington like 721's or 722 older internal adjustment, steel tube Weavers or Lymans.  You could sell that Redifield for enough to buy two good Weaver T's

If going with the receiver - barrel mounted scope best if the blocks are parallel and level I have seen 03's with this set up and the blocks were on the same plane

I can see the need for the scope to be tilted downwards. The problem seems to be the tops of the bases are not parallel ( on the same plane) with each other. It seems odd to me that the company does not address that in the installation instructions or that the mounts made for the specific model of rifle do not take that into account. As to a modern scope-- the rifle had one and I wanted to use the 3200 that I had in my collection. I have had the rifle since it was new in 1969 and the period scope looks good on it.

Are you sure you have the correct bases? Do what boats said put a good modern scope on it.I like the old redfield stuff I have a 3200 & 6400. The Balvar 8 on my MS has better optics.
Only an opinion

The bases are new in the package and are listed in the 1971 Redfield catalog as being for a Model 700 short action. The whole purpose of this exercise was to put a long period scope on the rifle. The rifle is rarely used ( only for target shooting) as I mainly use single shots. If this doesn't work I have a nice Litschert 12X that looks good on the 700, those mounts will handle a slight difference in base heights.

my 3200 rings apear to have adjustable bases on them. Why not save the scope for a dedicate target gun. What model is this Remington?

Modern long range scope mounts for competition and long range sniper type rifles have a 10 to 20 degree angle machined into them so that the internal adjustable scopes don't run out of adjustment range at maximum distances.  A good machinist (or gunsmith) should be able to machine or grind the bases to get the angle you need to avoid stress on the scope tube.  Might even be able to do it with custom made shims, tapered to get the angle right...

screwloosetc --it is a Remington 700 short action in .222 from around 1968. I have the scope ring here apart in front of me and it doesn't appear to be adjustable, it just looks that way due to the construction of the ring
I had also thought of fitting the bottom of the blocks so they are on the same plane. Oddly enough I have two front redfield bases that are have the same part number on them--one that came with the mounting set for a 700 and the other was an extra from????? One of the bases ( kit base) mikes .420 on both ends as the spec sheet says it should.  The other one ( not modified in any way) mikes .422 on one end and .417 on the other??? All other bases I have from different makers all mike within .001 from one end to the other.

Looks like we are down to a straight edge, shims and JB weld.
I would line the blocks up with shim washers and when the angles are rite wax the gun and put the shims in place with a coat of J B weld on bottom of base. J B weld is pretty good stuff Heat dont bother it.

The more  Redfield information I read and looking at the base and ring the more I come to think they didn't worry about the problem. I think from reading the instructions it looks like the mounting clamps of the rings take up the misalignment. An experiment where I took a block and a ring and inserted a paperclip under one end of the ring to block interface and tightened the thumb screw  showed that the opposite end from the paperclip was flat down on the block as it should be. I still am not sure. These are the block instructions
