CPA Stevens barrel swap

I've been advised by Paul Schuttleworth that when you buy a new barrel from him to fit on a CPA action you already have, you must send the action back to CPA so that he can fit the barrel to the action. Even if the new barrel is sold by him. But, I've seen CPA barrels for sale without the actions.  Sort of a barrel swap.  Do the barrels that have been on one CPA rifle fit another CPA action?

What about a swap of a rim fire barrel and breech for a center fire?  Anyone have any experience with this?

Thanks, Rich

I have two CPA's and have worked on others, the barrels will not interchange, this is not to say that it cannot happen,  if we were to mix enough barrels and actions together we would sooner or later find some interchangeability.  Sometimes they are very close to interchanging but, close is not good enough.   ledball

Listen to the man that built your rifle no one knows the rifle better than he does!

I am kinda perplexed on why you did not listen to Paul in the first place?

I suspect the reason Paul and Gail require you to return the rifle to them for fitting another barrel is that the receiver and barrel threads are not indexed. The original Stevens rifles weren't either.

Gentlemen, thank you for your information.  J Louis, to answer your question, I was speaking to Paul about a new barrel, from him, for my Stevens.  Not a used barrel.  I see used barrels for sale and was just wondering.  I bought a CPA used in 25-20.  If I can't get the accuracy out of it I want, I thought about getting another barrel, maybe a used one.  I thought possibly the barrels, once fitted to a CPA action, might switch off like a Contender barrels.

It seems not that if I decide to get another barrel, I'll return the action to CPA for one of their new barrels and then have the 25-20 rebored out to another caliber rather then try to sell it.

Rich,

Just a thought and probably worth exactly what it is costing you, but how about rechambering that quarterbore barrel to .25-35?  If the twist is appropriate, you will get to shoot somewhat heavier bullets and use commonly available brass (or make your own from extremely cheap .30-30 brass!)  You'll have to alter the extractor a bit for the larger case head, but that should be pretty do-able when you recut the chamber.

Regards,
Froggie

Froggie,
I don't know anything about the 25-35 except when I owned a Contender with that barrel.  Is the accuracy up to the 25-20 SS?  I know one man who shoots the 30-30 in offhand matches and is extremely good!  I suppose the 25-35 might be good as well.  Thanks for the idea.
