Picked up a neat old Stevens 044 1/2 this weekend in 32-40, with a #2 24" barrel, and "H" tang w/ beeches front. Has a bunch of color case, and barre/receiver serials match. Will post pics tonight. Later, moodyholler

Moddyholler, Did you mean 32-20, I've never seen or heard of a 044 1/2 in 32-40 although it seems that anything is possible with Stevens. The shank of barrel must be rather thin with a 32-40

Nope 32-40 is correct. Neat and unusual little gun. Later, JAP

Ballards may be weaker,

Moodyholler--not to highjack your thread, but just wanted to say "Thanks" for the Lyman 144 tang sight you sold me last year.  It was everything you said it would be.
Here's a pic of it on my 418 if I haven't shown it to you before (with the Lyman 48L on it too).  I've never seen another one since.

I now have both the original and optional rear sights on the gun, and the optional front sight, with a lead on an original front Lyman 104 patridge sight.  Pretty soon Dad's gun will be back to factory original and with all the options too (except the a Lyman # 5 scope and mounts, which might be my next "must have"!

Now you can have your thread back  Smiley

Thanks again,

If you put a scope on there, things are really gonna get cluttered!

Nah, just want to do it "because I can".  Smiley
"Save me before I spend again"!
Kind of a hobby nowadays to find old guns that may not be "correct" and track down the parts to make them as they were (even though this is a keepsake and my Dad's gun before he passed).  To "un-bubba" them, so to speak.
In reality though it'd be easy to mount the scope on it --just flip down the tang sight and remove the vertical elevator by pushing the knurled release knob on the receiver sight.

Only trouble is knowing when to stop.  I got a Mitchell High Standard NIB at a steal of a price, and now I have another $300 in to it--but it's the only one I know of with 2 extra mags and their boxes, and both Mitchell barrel weights and muzzle stabilizer / brake  Embarrassed
Then throw in the Savage 99, and a few more HS pistols and-----

Same might happen to me with this gun--but don't really care here--this will go to my son and then his son (my grandson) someday.

418, you don't need saving because you are doing good things. Love my 418's and always looking for new variations. I keep buying tang sights and period scopes while I have a supply that I haven't gotten arround to installing on rifles yet. Did manage to get some installed last year though.

.990 thick, barrel is .950 across the flats, action is marked "044 1/2 0"
barrel is marked with a #2 under the forearm and the serial numbers match on action and barrel. Hope this helps, moodyholler

Moody,

Do you have a good closeup picture of the caliber stamping?
