38-55 & Alliant 300MP Conclusions
Feb 13th, 2011 at 4:59pm
Print Post
Below is a target I shot in practice on Friday Feb. 11, 2011 with my good friend shooting by my side. Unfortunately due to some health issues with my right wrist I will not be able to pursue any further load development for this cartridge at the present time. It is my hopes to move onto testing the new Alliant 300MP in my 33-47 and if there is an interest I would be more than happy to post my results.

My motive for posting this target is to encourage those individuals who are currently shooting 38-55's or are thinking of doing so in the future that might ask just how much accuracy could one expect to achieve.

Holy Mackeral!   I didn't know those things would do that.  Okay, that does it.  I have been contemplating going with a 38-55 on my next rifle, and now I'm sure.

May I ask some questions about your rifle?  What is its twist?  Is it a straight twist or gain twist?  Is it choked?  If you consider these to be personal or otherwise invasive, I will understand.

What are you sighting with?  (Iron or scope or what?)

What is your brass length?

Gee, I like that target.  Thanks for sharing.  I've never done THAT with a round ball.

Very nice. Sorry to read about your wrist. The biggest problem with getting 'older' is not that we get aches and pains (injuries), but how long it takes to get over them. Hope you heal soon.

Also, what wad, if any, have you been using? That's looks like a good load to start with in my 38-56.

Whistepigger if you scroll down to the bottom of this page and click on page 2 you will find two more segments that I posted on the 38-55 & Alliant 300MP with additional test targets and information that you might find to be helpful.

The Rifle is a CPA Model 52, Douglas premium barrel with a twist rate of 1-18. The brass length is 2.1285 and the sighting equipment is a Night Force 12x42 Benchrest Scope set at 42X.

If you have any further questions I would be more than happy to answer them for you.

SSShooter during the load development stages I found the rifle shot better without the use of a wad so I do not use one.

Thanks for the reply. No fear of 'ringing' the barrel without a wad?

Great targets. Do you have the velocity for your loads? Thanks again for sharing your load development work with us.

Bob I did not take out my chronograph which is highly unusual for me as I did not want the velocity to dictate where I wanted to go. I just started out with a low and safe powder charge then I worked my up until my targets told me to stop and I made all the fine adjustments from there.

Thank you very much for your compliment on the targets it is highly appreciated and my only motive for posting them and my test results was to motivate others to spend the time and effort it takes to achieve the same results of which are within everyone's reach.

In discussion earlier, Westerner mentioned the 38-40 Remington. Is using that cartridge, an attempt to come up with a smaller capacity case similar to the Miller in the .32's. Could there be an advantage to that cartridge and are there any attempts of other modern designs in a reduced capacity .38?
I reread John Merz's article in the Journal about the .357 based cartridges and he makes mention of the .333KR.  Does anybody have information on that cartridge like bullets twist etc.  Maybe a chamber design? Thanks!

The .333 KR is a case designed by the late Charlie Dell, it is a bottleneck case made from 30/30 Win or 30 American brass about 1.350 long. The barrels were 14 twist made by Douglas and are a true 33 caliber NOT .338.   ledball
