Hi Frank,
Since we are just a tad off the topic of Malcolm scopes, I'm starting another thread here "Stevens Buttplates" and will post some photos for you.  The stock and buttplate are from a Model 45 from the late Jim Grant's collection.  This appears to be the Number 3 Heavy Swiss buttplate.  This would interchange with the Stevens hard rubber shotgun buttplate which made it very handy to change the configuration of the stock for either target or hunting use.  I once owned a Model 47 that had both of these buttplates still with it.  The catalog page is from an original General Catalog No. 33 (1911).  Interesting misprint shows the Number 3 buttplate upside down!

You could always sand cast one in the privacy of your own garage.  I am working on a plate like that right now for a rifle I don't own or haven't figured out what it'll be yet.  Just found a custom plate on a rifle a buddy picked up that fits me well and I really like.

Tape it up with multiple layers of masking tape or duct tape.

I've owned a Stevens with the #2 buttplate. It was pretty well monkeyed with, but the plate and stock seemed to have been together for awhile:

Im glad you said it, cause I was thinking I had read that also. Like you, I cannot for the life of me remember where. With the dozens and dozens of gun books I have, old magazines and then this forum, could have read that anywhere.
