Malcom Scope?

Hello friends,  I spoke with Gary Quinlan at the MAAC show, and he had a very nice Malcom scope for sale...At first I didn't pay any attention..first because I know next to nothing about these early scopes and  second, it looked like it had been re-finished.  Well..it was all original..looked to be nearly unused.  Gary seemed surprised I didn't recognize a Malcome..Now the only ones I am familar with are the long, full-length one of civil-war-late 1800's period..didn't even know he made short ones.  After I got home, got to thinking about Mr. Malcom..If he started his business around 1855...and he must of been at least in his twenties..say 1830.  Gary said because of the mounts..scope probably dated from late 1920's perhaps very early 1930...William would be over 90 years old!  Is this the original William Malcom...or did he have a son take over?  I know Pope and others worked their whole life..no social security blanket..most probably died in harness...But I suppose,  as opposed to ending up in a nursing home somewhere....passing-on while in the midst of doing something you love isn't such a bad thought. From what I recall, William Malcolm was an optical engineer who invented, made and patented various optical instruments, but particularly telescopes, celestial and of course rifle scopes, I believe that his patents are still used today. I don’t know how long Wm. Malcolm lived or actually made scopes, but “Malcolm Rifle Telescope Co. of Auburn, New York” was in business to about 1940. I still have two Malcolm scopes and they’re both excellent.

Very nice scopes, indeed!  Company organized in 1855.  He died in 1890 but the business was continued by his heirs until the early 1940's.  Here are some photos of my 4X Malcolm on a Model 45 Stevens 25-20

Thank you, Leon.
Mine has the same stock but not in good condition. I bought a CPA stock to replace it but, it's a larger one that was suppose to be a option for the 45 with a different butt plate w/o a tang at the top. Do you have one like that or know of it?

I have a Parsons remake of the Malcolm and love it, when you can find them they are expensive but they are really nice quality. Parsons is still in the buisness and is planning on making more. I asked Gil a year ago what mine was worth and he said 1,600 and I just about fell over as a real Malcolm costs that much.
