Built up Trapdoor

This is my first Springfield Trapdoor. I accumulated the parts from all over. Alaska to New Mexico. It has a single set trigger and set operates at 3 to 5 oz's, not settled in yet. Unset at 2 lbs. This was built  as a hunting gun but it is point blank to 200 yds. I do like the early sighting system. I'm partial to traditional rifles. Thats why the sling. I hope you enjoy the pix.

NICE JOB Rusty. Glad you enjoy it. Hunting or target or both doesn't matter. I agree with you on the original rear sight, at least as open sights go. I've used them hunting and they pick up fast even in low light. Have fun.

I like it too. Like the Baker/Whelen cheek plate too.
Needs to be checkered, then it'll be a jewel.  Wink

Let's see if I can blow up the metal work pic a bit. It is truly excellent and rustyrelx was very lucky to find it in that condition.

This is not a find. I had wanted an origional muzzle loading long range rifle like the type used by the British at Creedmore. The pricing got so expensive that I finally decided that it was out of the question. I saw the stock at Treebone and concluded that this is the stock pattern that resembles the origional rifles. So my search for parts began in earnist. I wanted to build something that looked like the "Marksman Rifle" by Springfield as I did like those lines. It took about 2 years to get all the parts I wanted. But the parts were not particularly hard to find nor that expensive. I figured I could build this far less than what I could but an Italian or even an American Long Range rifle. The thing that I especially like is that I put it together for less than a cheep Italian import(Sharps) import. And this rifle looks, feels, and is heavy enough to be a "by God rifle" .. Don rustyrelx

Well Don, you hit your goal of the marksman's rifle and very nicely. One of my shooting buddies, a TD shooter, but not much of a historian, told me that while looking at some barreled actions for me at one show, he saw this strange one. Said the rifling was shiney and beautiful, but different than normal rifling. It had 6 lands and grooves instead of three, so he passed on it. He didn't know it was a rare "long range" rifle barrel as used in the two mile tests of 1879. As I quit shaking when he told me, I made the mistake of asking the tag price on it. When I heard $135.00, I choked.  Huh Oh well, so be it. Maybe there'll be another Roll Eyes

Which parts on a TD were originally blued and which were cased colored?

For SSShooter and color info. Basically it is safe to say all military TD's were all blued with the exception of "some" of the breech blocks, which were color case hardened. It's not as easy any more to find one with good colors any more. They, like some of us, are just a gettin' tooo darn OLDE.  Roll Eyes  Hope this helps,

Dick

This one also started out as a bunch of parts and a Treebone stock that has been in the shop for at least 10 years.  I don't remember how I came upon the stock.  The rifle had a rotted muzzle where someone tried to "recrown" with a pistol drill.  It is now 26" and I put a Beech combo sight on the front.  The rifling is good but not great.  Still holds minute of Deer and not too much recoil with the 330 Gould bullet.
