I'm looking for experiences on accurate no-groove bullets.  Shape, lubricant, size and so forth.  Swaged or cast.

Cat-W     What are you working with this winter.  Is the howitzer or the 3 inch Ordinance Rifle or Napoleon ?  Either way, swaging for those boys will take a lot of psi.    Just kidding.

What caliber conical are you working with ?

Cat,
I shot a 22rf breech seated with a grooveless bullet for a few years. I shot more that 1000 rounds between testing and matches with it and never once leaded the barrel in hot or cold weather. I used both Lee alox and Darr lube on it. I can't remember which did better.

It is a Mann style 2 diameter bullet with a sptizer nose. The nose slightly engraves the lands and the base band was about .001 over the .223 groove. If you do a seach for 22rf breech seat, it should turn up the thread that I posted it on. There are pics of the bullet and mold.

Cat,
I started shooting some swaged no-groove bullets last year. They were lubed with alox, shot very nice at 100 Yds. some group were in the 3's and a lot in the low 4's, it got to cold for me so had to stop testing, will start again this spring. This is one of the groups shot with them.

I have .30 and .45 molds cut by Werner Wolf. There are bullets that shoot more accurately than the .30 bullet in some of my guns. I should do some more work with this bullet. The .45 bullet dipped in Darr lube so it's lightly coated, with a LDPE wad, 24/SR4759, Rem 2 1/2 shoots well. Last time out averaged 1.380" for 5 5 shot groups.
No leading problems with either bullet. .45 ~445 gr., .30 ~ 208 gr.

What alloy works best with this style of bullet?

The 22 cal bullets that I used were 20/1 but, I'm sure that 30/1 would has also worked in 22.

I've used WW to 25:1 with no detectable difference in accuracy. I'm going to try breech seating the .45, then will use a soft bullet.

Here's what the swaged 32's look like, this one is a 190 Gr., .322,  30-1. Being swaged the bases are perfectly flat and there are no air pockets, voids, wrinkles,  or anything else to affect the bullet,  the bearing surface of the bullet is knurled then the lube is applied and impregnated into the sides of the bullet when it's sized.

Just a few questions.   .   .did you purchased the swaged bullet just as it is pictured. If bought, what is the source.  If you swaged them, are they from alloy wire that may be bought?

Hi,
The photo is not of a finished bullet.
That photo is when the lead is pushed too far into the die.
The nose is actually flat without the little tip.

The lead used is bullet wire that I purchase.
Only the .32 caliber bullet is available at this time.
The .30 caliber tooling has not been delivered yet.

Let me know what twist your barrel is and I can
recommend a weight that should work in it.
I will work with shooters to get the weight that works best in your rifle.

Good answers, thanks.
It's been a year.
I'm no closer to building a device to knurl slugs and then to swage them.

hmmm.

Time to go to the shop....

This became a new problem for me this year. I have always used cast bullets, but I aquired a set of NDFS swaging dies for a .38 Special hollow based round nosed bullet and I thought that they would be the answer for .360 no5 and .380 long. These Rook rifles have grooves in excess of .372" dia.
According to traditional reloading wisdom, I did everything wrong. The slugs were sprayed with 3 in 1 oil befor swaging, set up on a tray and sprayed with a bicycle chain lube containing ptfe.
Results---first place in the black powder class in the Midland Rook Rifle championship followed by first place at Bisley in the 100yd off-hand Rook Rifle comp at the Trafalgar meeting. I like swaged bullets.

we have a couple active shooters at EG who are also shooting in the PB division of the CBA.  They were telling me that the CBA guys are shooting the no-groove bullets  fairly regularly.  There might be more data on their site.

I've been helping with scoring at the matches, trying to learn more.  I'm not looking forward to scoring offhand targets shot using this method.  I LIKE big dark easy-to-see greasy lube edges on the paper Cheesy.

Ballards may be weaker,

I got my hands on a bunch of those no groove bullets in .381" several years ago. They were dirt cheap, so I figured I'd give them a try in one of my Ballards.
I lubed them with liquid alox and shot 20 rounds at the range. To my surprise they were extremely accurate, so now I covet them!
