Hank45, what rifle would you be re-loading the 28-30 cartridge for? & are you shooting fixed or breech seat rounds?

Hank only have one load for 2400 and a 126gr cast bullet breech seated from my notes, this was in a Stevens M44 I had a few years ago 1977-1981.

UMC original 28-30 case with small primer pocket, Fed small rifle primer.

Lyman 287373 126gr bullet cast from 1:30 alloy, not sized and pan lubed .289" Bullet seated almost .100" deep to get past a small rough spot in the start of the bore.

9.7 Grains of an OLD LOT of 2400 (powder in the Metal Can) BE VERY CAREFUL NOT TO DOUBLE LOAD THIS POWDER CHARGE
I would not now use this load in a Stevens M44 rifle, I'd use H4227.

In a Ruger you should not have problems, just remember I was using an OLD lot of 2400 and an OLD original case.

Nice thing about the 28-30 is you do not need a wad to hold the powder in place for breech seating, although my original data for the 2400 load calls for a 1/16" thick cork wad seated above the powder.

Wishing you the best of luck with your 28-30, it has been a long time ago for me but I really enjoyed the light recoil and low noise factor of the 28-30.

Now have a 7 Brewer (necked down, shortened 30-30 cartridge) built on a Ruger #3 that my son shoots breech seated and some fixed ammo, the 7mm/28 calibers are great shooters with the right bullet.
