J.Louis when and if Spring ever rolls around I will try a split batch with standard and magnum primers, in my very first test load I only loaded 13.9 grains of the MP-300 if remember correctly, makes sense though as that is the same as my usual N110 load, I will chrono each and see which gives the best performance on the target and comparison of how clean they both shoot side by side. Most of the time I use large Pistol primers with the N110 loads, it burns very clean  with the Large Pistol or Rifle primers.

Thanks for the 38-55 info I will give it a try in my 44 1/2, my go to powder in 38-55 is IMR4198 and sometimes N120.

Mike

J. Louis this target was fired in competition using N110 and a Hoch 196gr PB breech seated bullet, 10 shots at 100yds, it is going to be difficult to really improve on this combo, but who knows never hurts to test. All groups I have fired with this load in competition have been under 1.2" for 10 shots @ 100yds, a few in the 5/8" range.

This next year I will be able to have some targets shot on ASSRA targets, hopefully they will be just as good, off hand shots will be on the target with luck. Mike

J. Louis - That's a couple of nice targets.

Got any pet 32-40 loads with H-108 you want to share with us?

Thought folks might be interested about the new Alliant Pro Series powder:
1.  The 300-MP (Magnum Pistol) is scarcer than hens teeth!
2.  Here's the MSDS for the powder
(You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)
3.  It's a powder made in the US for a change

J, thanks for the leads.  I called a north Jersey reloading supplier today and he is going to order me a 1lb container.  A friend of mine lives in the same town and I'll have it delivered to my door in south Jersey!  Grin

J, thanks for the offer for the work involved to do the scans and provide them to me.  With the power of computer software, I slipped in ahead of your offer and have already copied your 32-40 and 38-55 targets (with the loading data on them) to my computer when you posted them.  They currently reside as color prints tacked on the wall in my reloading room ... waiting for the 300-MP powder to arrive!  Grin  Don't take me wrong, if you have more great recipes with the Alliant powder/bullet combination ... consider my email by PM to you done tonight

My plans are thus:
32-40:  to use your powder recipe and the Doc Hudson Ideal 319273 and 319298 bullets for test runs.  I have shot these using black powder and was pleased with the groups @ 100 - 200.  But they weren't even close to yours targets ... I''ll try harder!
38-55: again your powder load and the Ideal 375166 and 375272 bullets.  Both of these reloads with black powder have provided accurate hits on all the steel silhouettes out to 500 meters.  My 1st test of the 375166 with BP, at 100 and 200, the reloads shot less than MOA
8.15x46R:  Have not shot this rifle yet.  Sunday will be my virgin test at our weekly 25yd offhand gallery match.  Will be using a 180gr 0.316 stop ring bullet with a downloaded 5.2gr Trail Boss charge.  After the match, will shoot it from rest.  Then when the 300-MP powder arrives, shoot the same with a download recipe for comparison.  In April, full loads will be used for our 1st 100 - 300 yd Schuetzen match of the year
I'm even thinking, if the powder works in a 32-40, no reason why it shouldn't work nicely in a 25-20 too, if loaded properly.
I have no scopes on my rifles, only verniers.  So my groups will be more open than your beautiful targets that you posted.  But based on your targets with the MP-300, am expecting better groups using my verniers

One initial question I do have.  Have you tried any reloads using a floral foam or paper wad on top of the powder?

I have been reading this trend and watching the powder amounts per charge. With the talk of both 32-40 and 38-55 and the amounts of powder charge for these cal. I am a little confused as to which cal you folks are dusscussing. Would you list the starting load for the 32-40 so that I can get the info stright in my mind. Also what do you thing of the Alliant 300MP in a fixed load?

J, my test of the 300-MP as I mentioned with the same CPA Douglas barrel, but will be fixed cartridge, .  It is not throated for breech seating.  I have shot the Hoch 322-200 as a fixed reload with both BP and nitro (2400 and Trail Boss).  It produced good groups out to 200.  Sorry, no targets.  But they were not like your groups! Sad

J Louis and John Boy thanks for the reply. I just looked at the groups and not the write up on the target. Some of the matchs here are for fixed ammo, others are breach loaded or fixed ammo. I have reloaded and shot for many years but breach loading is new to me so i have been reading all that I can find.

John and the boys,  thinking about trying 300mp in my 32 miller short, where would you start?  I know you are shooting the 32-40's, I have two pounds of this stuff and would really like to start using it.
On the burn rate chart it shows it's just a little bit slower than AA9 and it seem like everyone loves A9 around 11 gr.
thanks, if you can help

These loads seem rather small considering the case capacity of the 32-40.  Does anyone load a bulkier powder or do they not perform well?

The accepted bulkier powder is 4759, the problem is 1 in small cases it doesn't meter well and 2 it shoots dirty. I wish there were someone making bulk powders like King's simi smokeless of Lesmoke. The problem is that they are both extremely dangerous to manufacture and blowing up the plant was a not infrequent experience.
