... and have no idea when Starline will do the next run of 38-55's for the brass.  Boxes me in, 30-30's on the lathe in a mandrel turning some rims down  Angry

Really tough John Boy.   Undecided

How or what kind of mandrel do you use John Boy?

I chuck um up in a three jaw.

Whats wrong with 30/30s?  Whats the advantage to using 38/55s ?   Huh

I always used .32 Win Spl brass with no modification in my Aydt. Just ran them through the sizing die and reloaded them. Never needed to trim the rims for my gun.

I'm lucky with my Aydt, where the 30-30 brass has the right rim diameter and thickness.  Form and trim, load and shoot.  I suppose I should do a detailed chamber cast measurement on mine...I've been running a .321" Clerke bullet breech seated.

Joe, the mandrel is:
* Ream the flash holes on the cases
* Length of brass rod longer than the case length
* Trim part of the rod to the ID of the case being rim trimmed
* Put a slight point on the end of the rod so it snugs up against the flash hole
* Put the mandrel in the chuck, seat case on the mandrel and then bring up the live center so there is a 'friction drive' to trim the rim

Clarification:  BACO uses Starline 38-55 brass to reform to 8.15x46R.  I use 30-30 cases.  I have a bunch of old ones and the only brand with a rim too wide to fit in the #2 shellholder are Super-x's.  If one uses these, just use the 30-30 shellholder when reforming
