30-30 or 32 Special Brass in a 32-40?

What are the steps for using 30-30 brass in the 32-40? Is it as simple as running the 30-30 brass through the 32-40 FL sizing die? Haven't read much of anything other than it is possible.

How about using 32 Special brass as opposed to 30-30? Same drill?
Thanks.

If you can get it, .32 Special is the easiest base case to make .32-40 from.  Just lube and size until you can just chamber the case.  Case will be a little short and you will probably not need to trim to square up the case mouth.

With .30-30 cases, you will be neck expanding the case.  I leave the expander button in the resizing die so expand the neck before sizing the rest of the casse.  Lube neck and case, then expand neck and partially size case, re-distribute sizing wax on case, nearly ful size case and try in chamber,  adjust sizing die until case fits.

Have been using once fired .30-30 cases with some .32 Special cases 40+ years and get 20 plus loads from cases without annealing in a 1893 Marlin Rifle.

I've used 30-30 cases to make my 32-40 shells for hunting for many years. (If I lose a fired case it's no big deal). I've reloaded them several times without any problems with the cases. They do come out a little short of specs. but work fine, just clean the breach area well before firing the longer 32-40 case or they might stick. I have several hundred un-fired 32-40 cases still in the bag and save them for target work. But I haven't noticed any difference in accuracy.
But just to add to the confusion, why not use the readly available 38-55 brass from Starline to form your 32-40 brass? They have some extra long brass available and it would seem to me that they would work and could be made into the correct lenght for 32-40. This is theory only as I haven't tried it. YET!

I just read my own reply and noticed I didn't answer your main question. Getting old ain't what I thought it was supposed to be.
To answer your question concerning what steps to take--
Lube your 30-30 brass with case lube and run it through your 32-40 dies. I do it in steps that is I run them up into the die a little, and then back off and do it again untill the case goes all the way in. Try the altered cases in your 32-40 chamber for fit. If they are slightly too tight, run them through the 32-40 die again. As I said I have only fired these cases a few times each but, haven't had any split cases or problems and I don't do any annealing or special prep to the cases before altering.

I make all my 32-40 and 38-55 brass for field use out of 30wcf cases, but I also only use Imperial wax, never loos a case...

Well, they don't really have it available. They are awaiting enough orders to make a run. I put in mine to add to list. We'll see when they show up. Thanks.

I'm sorry to hear of the delay. I had bought several hundred rounds of it last year and love the long stuff in my 85 Winchester and 82 Maynard. I didn't know it was difficult to obtain.

My backordered brass has been shipped in 32-40.  Not sure but maybe the supply is flowing again.
