25 cal bullet mold
Dec 23rd, 2010 at 3:45pm
Print Post
Aside from Colorado Shooting Supply, does any other company make a .257 tapered mold for breech seating in a 25/20 WCF?  I have a Hoch mold on order but who knows when that will be done.  This for a CPA.
Thanks.

Rich CPA (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links) stock bullets moulds and they list this one for the 25.20

.25 Schuetzen
.258" x .250" tapered for breech seating
105 grains
suitable for .25-20SS, .25-20WCF, .25-21

I had my new 38-55 mould in hand in four days after placing the order.

David Mos makes the nicest .25 mould I have ever seen. You will need a 1:10" twist to shoot it.

If you can live with a straight sided mold there is always RCBS.

Thanks for your comments guys.  CPA gets their mold from Colorado Shooting Supply and they do not have any in stock.  They are still waiting for the 25 molds and they don't know when they will come in.  That was two months ago.  They sure do make beautiful rifles though.

I got to shoot bullets from my new David Mos .25 mold yesterday. Biggi used my old Hoch Pope style 110 grainers.  She beat me from the bench. I had nine shots on one target and eleven on the other.  The Mos bullets are so perfect I didnt put an index mark in the mold.  The Mos bullet holes are very hard to see at 200 yards.

OAL   .986

Base  .257

Base to top of top grease groove  .440

Dia at top Grease groove  .252

Dia of bore riding section  .250

Weight 120

Spitzer

Didnt see any marks what so ever on the mold Rich.  I think without  the wind this bullet will shoot extremely small groups. Had my cheapo Chinese spotting scope so had one heck of a time seeing the bullet holes.

Did you add a mark in your mold Dave?  Can we see a picture of one of your bullets?

With this new spitzer bullet the holes are much harder to see at 200.  Ever try sooting the nose before loading?  I might start using the white plastic behind the target trick again.

Most shots in the two targets were shot blind. Biggi held center every shot while I adjusted the scope back and forth for the condition. I held off when I thought I had to. Very frustrating when you cant see the bullet holes.

I see no need to mark the mold if it is manufactured perfectly concentric. PJ molds due not have variations which I have found in some cheaper factory style molds. I am not sure what you gain from marking a good custom mold.

The picture  of the 25 caliber Paul Jones bullet has been lubed with dyed lube. A small can of black shoe polish has been mixed into a pound of lube to show up the bullets on targets. Really tough to see the .25 holes so I am thinking of adding a large can of black shoe polish per pound of Alberta Schuetzen lube to get a darker bullet ring.

Pat Weber uses green shoe polish in her lube so she can pick up cross fires on her targets.

I still use a red filter on my spotting scope to help pop out those bullet holes. The black ring from the shoe polish in the lube does help them pop out a bit better.

If you do not mind losing a bit of speed a tablespoon of Moly per pound of lube provides an excellent bullet ring.

Green shoe polish?  What will they come up with next?

I agree Dave, no mark in my new mold for now. The bullets come out round.

Going out to shoot the Aydt today. Gonna take a white plastic bag with us.
Might take the Ratfink Ballard too. That white plastic trick really works. Used to anyways.
I have a red filter in my shooting box but Always forget to use it.

Joe:

What is your powder load with your 120 grain MOS .25?
And velocity?

I am shooting around 1560 fps with 9.4 grains H108.

I'm using 8.5 grains IMR 4227.  H108 does funny things to the necks of my cases. Makes them shorter and fatter at six oclock. A case will only last about twenty shots.  I'm using a weak action too, so keep the velocity down.
