Plastic .32-40 Ammo Box
Dec 4th, 2010 at 1:44pm
Print Post
For my .32-40 fixed ammo, I purchased a MTM RS-S-50 CaseGard  .22-250/32-40 Ballard.  Problem - allowable bullet length is just at 2.49", which is short of maximum 2.55 OAL.  Closing the box the lid is under pressure and, because no crimp, often bullets are popped back into the casing.  My hi-wall needs a slightly longer cartridge to touch the lands.  Any suggestions?

I like the cases with removeable lids, not hinged.

Cajun:         You might try the cheap Midway 509  case, 50 rounds.  Good for almost 3"  and comes in different colors.  Works well for carying charged cases for breech seating with the top filled with foam.               good luck        andy Z

I use a chunk of wood with holes bored in it for my BR stuff, going to make up a couple for the new 25-06 and 45-70 too.  Not hard to make and a lid is no problem.

I have the same dang problem with fixed ammo. I dont size my cases so the bullet will drop out. Have to set them base down. I went to the sporting goods store last week and got eight fifty round plastic boxes. The spaces look to be big enough to fit .50 BMG cartridges in. I cut pieces from an old wool blanket to fit on top of the bullets so they wont rattle around and drive me crazy on the road.
I hate fixed ammo. Hates a strong word, I know. Couldnt find a stronger one. Fixed ammo sux! Plastic boxes sux!  Sad

Cajun, I use the Berry's MFG #409-308 clear hinge boxes for 32-40.  The rounds can be stored nose up and the maximum box clearance is 2.90.  My reloads are 2.65

Finally got around to drilling some blocks for cigar boxes.  Drilling the holes is a real pita.

How do the rest of you guys drill your holes?

Joe,
Your box looks very good and well spaced.I don't know if you have a milling machine but, I use either a counter bore (flat bottom) or a end mill (nearly flat bottom) to make my bullet blocks. It's still a lot of work and makes a mess. The counter bores and end mills cut the wood a lot better and don't wander.

Not a bad cigar either.

Back to the topic, on plastic boxes I put foam on the lid to protect the bullets.

Sorry about that Dave. Didnt want to start a whole new thread. I think the wood boxes fit okay here.  I use wool in place of plastics to hold my bullets in the boxes, wood and plastic.  Wink

Yeah I have a mill Frank but decided to use the old drill press.  Heres how I did it.  I got these holes drilled in about 45 minutes. Not as big a PITA I thought it was the first time.  Learned a couple little tricks along the way that really speed things up. Wouldnt want to make these for a living.

That's a good setup; try a Forstner bit.

Joe, I was the one wandering off topic with my lust for quality cigars.  No appologies needed.

I am curious about your guide on the drill press.  Do you use two and leap frog them so as to keep the rows parallel and evenl spaced?
