Identifying a Stevens Singleshot

Checking in a Gun shop while away from home
He had a Stevens single shot in 22lr, I did some research and found it was M,44 and had the correct marking under the lever
OK he said bringing out another Stevens what is this?
This was similar to the M,44 but had no markings other than Stevens. calibre (32 I think) a flat shotgun type butt and a quite different action
It seemed to be more like the Winchester M.85  with the block dropping rather than swinging like the other Stevens
Any ideas?

I agree.  Sounds like the 44 1/2

Sounds like 44 1/2 if it is the same overall size as the 44. When you open the action are there two bars, one on each side of the breach block, that extend out of the bottom of the action?

Thank you all, that's it, the bars guiding the block are the give away I would suggest

Nice to see one, even better it is not for sale so there is no temptation although I have the correct tang sight so I can tempt him Cheesy

The 44 1/2 is the premium Stevens action. It is the stoutest one they made.

With the flat butt, assuming it's original, my bet is on 044 1/2

May be, but I've seen a few 44 1/2 action model 45's with the stagshead buttplate.
