Yes it is a #3 barrel. You'll have to negotiate with my widow to get it. I have to admit its not my favorite American single shot. I think that honor goes to this Mod 49 (44 1/2) Stevens in 25/20 SS. I've always liked them better than Stevens 52s, because they are lighter.

This is one I built. It is in 40-60 Maynard. It is like a Farrow in many way.

LRF,
Can you tell us more about it? It looks like there's a hammer sticking up just a bit in the picture or is it a striker breech block?

Thanks for the interest, it is appreciated. What you see is the hammer. Opening the level lifts the hammer to half cock and then lowers the BBlock. The hammer is mounted in the BB.
The gun is a takedown. Removing the forearm key allows the barrel to be unscrewed. The lock between the barrel and action is based on the Savage 99 takedown.
Front sight is a spirit level windage.
I shot the rifle in 600 yard BPC matches. Paper patch bullets.
Here are a couple more pics.

Very nice! If you built that yourself you must be quite handy around a mill and a lathe, to say nothing of a set of carving tools. Would be nice to have the tools and the skills to do so. To say nothing about the time involved. Great work.

Hello  LRF,

Welcome to the Forum.

That is one very interesting rifle indeed. I take it, that it is your own design, and manufacture. The Farrow ancestory is apparent at least externally.

I'm sure I'm not the only one that would lie to see the innards, if that is possible. A very, very nice piece of craftsmanship indeed. I can't fault a single thing. That's something else I now have to aspire too.

All,
Thank you for the compliments. They are appreciated.
As to the inners of the design I have the CAD files I drew to use in making the gun and if someone is interested I can share them. AutoCAD or DXF? I guess PDF too but you can't measure those easily. I would ZIP them up so they can be posted, I believe.

Someone just needs to show me how to attach a file.

Thanks again.

This is a J.M. Marlin # 6-1/2 Offhand rifle.  It was found at a local shop just sitting on the rack.  It is the only one I have seen and probably the only one I will ever see other than pictures, given the rarity.  Not a safe queen, it was heavily used as the nickel on the Swiss butt plate is worn off except for a couple small spots and the barrel has been replaced by a #3 Hiwall barrel blank (no caliber marking, no Winchester markings) and is now chambered in 38-55 Ballard.

I believe it was originally chambered in 40-65 Ballard as the extractor is stamped "38-55" and this would not have been a necessary change had it been in 38-50 Ballard, the only other caliber that was offered.

By the way, a chamber cast of this one and a 38-50 Ballard in a #4 show the rifling to be nearly identical.  Don't know how to explain that......

Beautiful gun, Joe. I've always wanted to build a Trap Door in to something like that. I've got the action, lock, triggers, trigger gard and butt plate. I just need a stock maker to put them together in that style.

That's one of the nicest Meunier's I've seen. Back in the late 50's they would regularly show up at Wisconsin Gun Collectors shows. Now I never see them.

Thanks guys!

Frank,
I think Trapdoordick is your man when it comes to stocking a TD in the Schutzen style.
I have special blanks for such a rifle.  Claro Walnut in super fancy grade to some figure grade. All were cut for straight grain in the forestock and wrist area. All are large with enough drop for the most extreme Schutzen style.

Thanks Joel,

Lucky to get this one.
It came from PA.

Joe,
Very nice rifle, in fact, exceptional. Notice it does not appear to have a set trigger. Is this typical for percussion Schutzen rifle. Seems most of the later cartridge Schutzen's do have sets. No criticism, just curious about the style change.
