Have I ever enjoyed this thead.    What a world to stumble into!!!   I'm not in you guy's league since mine are reproductions but I've had fun shooting a new Sharps and Rolling Block and hope to add a Marlin Ballard and Highwall someday.  I'll try and post pictures but seem to be having my share of technical difficulty.

Best Regards,
John

And a half-stock Winder, one of the very last Winchesters.

Is the forearm original?  Looks that way to me. When you compare the quality of this rifle & action to the pre-WW1 rifles, the lack of effort really shows.  The blue is exactly the same as found on a Winchester-made 1917 Enfield.

Thought I'd revive this old thread with another picture. Recently finished building stocks and built a fitted case for this Nimschke engraved special order Ballard. .38-55 caliber, about a 3.5 weight full octagon barrel, factory midrange vernier, and wind gauge globe, scope mounts for later external adjustment scope.

That is a neat set-up. Wish I had the skill to make a case like that. Dale.

That is a nice outfit, with a fine looking rifle in it. One of the accessories in there prompts me to ask a question, though. I've looked at the Marlin loading tools and wondered how they would be to cast with. I have done so with an Ideal tool, of which I have several, and it's a pain. Literally. Heavy, hot and clumsy since I'm left handed. The Marlin tool is something I have never owned, so couldn't make a comparison. I don't really want to use either for my general casting, just wanted to see how the thing performed. Have you ever done so?..... or anyone else?     Pat

Thanks!
The 1881 Marlin tong tool was designed by John Browning, and John Marlin bought the patent from Browning. I've got 4 different calibers and they cast a very nice bullet, but they are fairly heavier than a Ideal tong tool. Being all metal, it require gloves if you cast many bullets.

I'll be adding a leather strap for the barrel to ensure the barrel doesn't drop out of the slot when carrying it.

The dividers are easy, but the tricky part is the felt covering. It's amazing how much material the case and dividers will use up! I bought two yards, and it took all but some scraps to finish.
I cut all the small pieces and test fit each before gluing them on the dividers. Then once all the dividers are covered, I cut the "floor" of each compartment, and test fit them. This case added some extra effort, as I usually do the exterior walls separately, but since it's curved from floor to wall, I had to cut pieces that laid in the floor, and continued up the wall in one piece.
The only area I cut a pattern for was the large opening the gun rests in. It was so long, and had so many shapes, that I cut a butcher paper pattern to fit it first, and then pinned the pattern to the felt and cut it out. Large areas get glue spread on one half, and the pattern folded back. Then once one half is secured, I put glue down, and roll the felt in place for the other half.
The case is a nice old case that's covered in alligator skin, and was on a guy's table at one of OAC's little collector gun shows for $5-$10? It's set in a corner for a few years, as I knew it would be a fitted case for something in the future.

Just a nice old gator hide. A little worn on the corners, but that gives it character:
