Frank, this gun came from a private collection. The owner is deceased, so that source is out. The guns he had were all high end, Griffin & Howell, winchester 52, all 40's models, as new. Some 1897 Marlins, you get the picture. I am just now starting to search for info on this gun. I am also researching a German Drilling without much success, but it is early. This 22 I have claimed as mine. I did have one individual state it could be a custom gun, but he could add nothing further. But, the similarties in the two tend to make me believe they have the same orgin. How would I go about obtaining the Cody letter?

I don't have any photo's of the entire rifle. I suppose I should rectify that but it would kind of take up the top of the wife's washer and dryer I use as the photo staging area Roll Eyes Anyway, here goes:

It's chambered 32-40. So far all I've ever shot out of it was fixed ammo. There is no attached means for a breech seater hookup.

Thats a beautiful gun, Buckstot. Very nice stock and action. I would love a full view, too as well as a shot with the action open.

Thank you,

Frank

Buckshot, there's no means for a breechseating tool on your Aydt action rifle because German shooters always shot cased ammo. They never breechseated their cartridge guns.

Wow Val,
That's over the top. I would have never dreamed of a #1 RB in 22rf or that engraved three barrel and scope #4. Very impressive.

Thanks Frank! The #1 in .22LR is a hoot to shoot with. It's a non factory chambering, and someone built a wonderful sliding extractor system that works better than any .22RF extracttor I've ever owned!
When I bought it the barrel was only 22" long, but shot very nicely. I loved the accuracy, but didn't like the looks. I turned it over to John Taylor to see if he could improve it, but not change the barrel.
John did his usual magic by turning a stub of .45 cal. barrel to press over the existing barrel and match up with the round portion of the 1/2 octagon barrel and extend it to 30". Kinda like a "bloop tube" for .22 rifles. Then I just rust blued the whole barrel again, and it was looking better.
Here's a picture of the unique extractor system:

The #4 was built up by a friend who wanted a 3 barrel set with full length scope to transfer between barrels. The barrels are full octagon, half octagon, and full round.

Thank you very much!
The #1 is a real favorite. Not a high end gun, and made up from numerous parts with mods, but such a joy to shoot it makes it all more appealing.

New to the forum, some members asked to see my High Wall.

1885 Special Sporting Rifle
32" #3 barrel, .25-20 Single Shot
#2 Wood, pistol grip, checkered.
Close-coupled double set trigger
Mfg 1904
Factory ledger does not designate sights: Gun came to me with a #2 Lyman peep (maked "D"), Lyman rear buckhorn, and Lyman ivory bead front, marked "Lyman Pat 1890".  This front sight is smashed to the right 90 degrees.

First pic is as it looks now (after being cleaned and lightly polished with denim and paste wax).  Following pics are as it appeared when purchased. Many of the surface scratches are now much reduced.

splitpatch - indeed, a beautiful rifle. Your post has inspired me to take a few more shots of the High Wall was fortunate to find last week. My photo skills and camera are certainly not up to yours and do not do this very nice rifle justice.

Per the 'letter' from the Cody Firearms Museum, This 1891 High Wall is one of the few that was originally chambered in 38/56. They first sent the info that it was 38/55, but when I replied, asking if they had any info on sights or the stock, etc., they discovered their typo and sent me another letter. The rifle currently has a 30" Winchester #3 full octagonal barrel chambered in 32/40. Too bad it does not still have the 38/56 barrel, as that is what I shoot in BPCR silhouette.

The slightly out-of-focus pic is just to show the great figure in the wood. The bore is absolutely pristine.

As a side note, ask the folks at C. Sharps if they could offer a set-trigger for this rifle. They only build/offer coil-spring guns. Found this a bit odd as the two C. Sharps High Walls I'm familiar with are both 'thick-side' recievers, which were all flat-spring guns. So, am on the hunt for a single-set trigger set for this rifle.

Edit: Spoke with Gary Quinlan last evening and he corrected what I stated in the above paragraph. Gary told me that Winchester did make some thick-side coil-spring recievers, but did not build any rifles with them. He recalls that Sedgley purchased the last of the 1885 receivers from Winchester as a lot in the '50s and that they were all new, blued thick-side coil-spring models. Wonder if Winchester was simply not going to put in the cost of milling them down to panel-side at the end when they stopped production? Who knows.
