First one I've ever seen Harry.  Real perty. It's the type of pattern seen on cheap lighters and cigarette boxes.

The engraving on the above Stahl rifle is called ( black leaf ).  The pattern and scrolls are perfectly done.  It may have lost some of it's glimmer over the years. It was case hardened in colors which are long gone.

I have two single shot rifles.  One is a Remington Rolling Block # 4 take down in .22lr.  Here's the other:

It has German BUG proof marks, which makes it an antique.  So far, I've been unable to identify the manufacturer.

Wow Joe,

I just caught myself staring at that rifle for a good 5 minutes flat and have a long tendril of drool down my chin. I dont care what anyone says about Germanic engraving- that is a beautiful rifle. I also have to compliment your shooting box. I have been looking high and low and either find a run of the mill Gerstner for too much money or a old beater with no life left in it. Someday !

Thanks Zack.

The shooting box I found at an antique mall for 25.00.  The veneer was gone on the top and back. The veneer on the front cover was curled up. Found a local guy who restores furniture. He gave me some veneer and told me how to restore the veneer in the front.  It's fun to have old stuff with an old rifle.

I have this Winchester 1885 Low Wall, 22 caliber, which I know very little about. It has a 4 digit serial number, which I think reflects it was produced in 1887. The sight appears to be a Winchester Midrange Vernier tang sight. Under the forearm is a dovetail which I think was part of an old trigger spring. The barrel I know nothing about. No markings. I shoot this gun in silhouette matches and it is very accurate out to 100m. The trigger is nice and the action is smooth. Any information would be greatly appriciated.

That is one beautiful LW. I have no info for you other than it still has the leaf spring hammer with the coil spring on it.

Could we get a shot of the grip cap? I think I've seen another gun with the same cap.

Thanks for the pictures,

Frank

Sure, here are some additional pictures of the grip cap, along with others. Anything to assist me in acquiring information on this gun.
Thanks

XB,
Take a look at these picture and see how the gun compares to yours. The grip cap and other things look very similar.

Your right Frank. The vernier sight looks the same also. The butt plate on mine has only the bottom extension. Do you think that the grip cap was an option on these guns? I have read that the list of option was pretty extensive. Wouldn't a factory barrel have some kind of ID on it?

Larry,
I posted that gun on this forum when it was for sale here locally and the response here was that it wasn't a Winchester pattern. It was said to have Cody Paper work (I didn't see the document) saying that it was a Swiss model Winchester 1885.

Could you do a full length side shot of your gun and a close up of the wrist area on both sides to compare the pistol grip shape?

Larry,
It does seem that they both could have been made by the same source. Weather Winchester or a custom gun maker.

The forearms seems the same but, my pics are close enough to tell for sure. The checkering pattern looks the same near the frame.

The grip cap is almost (if not perfect) a perfect match. 16 flutes on each.

But, the butt stock has some differences as well as the butt plate. Your butt plate looks like a cut off Helms. The BP on the pics that I took, hasn't been identified. Your cheek piece is a little shorter, and the grip ends on the one in my pic very different that any that I've seen. The overall pattern is very similar though.

They both have SS triggers and octagon to round barrels AND as I remember it also had a 4 digit serial number! And yes, they have the same tang sight!

If you could get the Cody letter on it, that might tell a lot more about both guns.

Does anyone else out there have a opinion on these two guns?
