Hi all. Been gone a while, but back.Chuckster, re: your last question about the curly ash.  There are two reasons it remained a schimmel. One is the beauty of the wood speaks for itself. Second, and most important, It was the most blankety blank piece of wood I every worked with. Scrape off grain  and watch a CHUNK fly into space. Scraping has to be INTO the grain. With that in mind and the part of my anatomy I paid for to get it...........Well it's just beautiful as a Schimmel. Stain on the rifle is olde fashioned nitrate of iron. Finish is the double boiled high viscosity linseed oil I make up. I really hate to think of getting rid of it, but I think it will be on the block pretty soon. Hope this helps Chuck. More later.

WOW!

Harold I truly enjoy the classic lines of your new found rifle!

It is absolutely gorgeous in my book and I truly hope that it will shoot as good as it looks.

During this past summer I had been trying to figure out what I could do to make a Stevens-Pope-Ballard that was my Grandfather's be more competitive at Etna Green.  I had several phone conversations and emails with Randy Wright and his favorite gunsmith Earl Hines in Cody, Wyoming.

After several discussions with Randy and Earl I contacted Paul Jones and had a new bullet mould made for this rifle.  It is a 197 grain French Breech Seat spitzer style bullet.  I also bought a seater from Russ Weber.  It has already fired 1 inch groups at 100 yards with the new bullet.

After several discussions with Earl I decided to take the plunge.  I sent the barreled receiver to Earl and he removed the receiver and sent it to Dale Woody ( (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)) for engraving and polishing.  While that was being done, Earl throated the barrel, tuned up the trigger mechanism and made an insert for the lever.

The case coloring was done at the Wyoming Armory by Keith Kelby.

Below are two links to Picasa web albums with pictures before and after the work was completed.

Earl Hines is truly a master gunsmith that does beautiful work and is a great person to work with whether it is restoration work or tuning up a new rifle.

To: J.Louis - Stocks have a Bishop butt plate. I figure they were made from the rough-shaped ones they used to offer. The general lines were what attracted me to the rifle. Checkering on the fore-end is nice; butt-stock panels not so much. I plan to have them refinished over the winter, but the checkering will have to stay as-is. Going to attack a woodchuck or two in the spring.

This is my recently acquired Stevens 44 action in 32-40 as refurbished by CPA in 1996 according to their records.  It looks like it just came out of their shop!  Lucky me!

This is my first attempt to post a photo so I hope it works! This is my collection of mostly Ballards with a Winchester 1885 lo-wall and a Rem. Rb in .40-65. Several of the Ballards I restored, but only if they were mismatched when I got them, the originals were left original. I still have alot of work left on some of them.  Merry Christmas to all.   Richard

Great picture, Richard, tell me about the butt stock on that first Ballard (hell tell us ALL about that gun) on the left and what caliber is the Pacific?

Frank,

The third rifle from the left is a Ballard #10 Junior,38-55. I haven't touched it as it came that way. I bought it from the late Gene Farmer, but it belonged to his friend Roy Watson. I believe it to be a Ballard # 10, Scheutzen. 32" barrel, original globe, level, front sight and original rear improved ballard sight. All serial numbers the same on the butt of stock, under receiver, on tail of breechblock, end of forearm. & under barrel. I would think though the stock would be a period replacement. I'm no expert, but I haven't seen a scrolled factory stock. I don't know Mr. Watson, but if anyone does, let me know, as I'd like more history on it.
