New Winchester High Wall 32-40

Hello All:
Newbie here. Have been shooting service rifle and rimfire competitions of various ilk for eons and have decided that I am finally old enough (62) to give BPCR 200yd silhouette, scheutzen and benchrest a try. While I would like to shoot a retored original or new custom Ballard or High Wall, I don't want to start off with such an expensive (at least for me) rifle until I've 'learned the game' on something like a new Winchester High Wall in 32-40 that FN is having made in Japan. Other than the fact that it is a 'factory-built' rifle, what are the weaknesses of this particular gun? Is the trigger so bad that no-one can make it decent? For $900 it seems to be a good place to start. However, I would appreciate any feedback from more experienced folks. Thanks, and am looking forward to shooting a new discipline.

SSS Posittion matches only,

I have a friend in the same situation as you. He's a long time Silhouette competitor picked up single shots last fall.

He uses the Jap Winchesters exclusively and has been winning our local matches.  I took him to his First Schuetzen match in June and he turned in a very respectable score.  They are frequent winners BPCS and long range Cartridge rifle.

Much as we like our nice single shots it's the Indian not the Arrow.  Trigger is the weak point on those guns but you can learn to shoot any kind of trigger. If using a Service Rifle now doubt if you will notice the difference.

Bench rest is a whole different game, problem with those guns is not the action or barrel, rifle stocked and sighted for position is going to have a hard time competing with a full on bench rest Schuetzen rifle

Thanks for the info. Should be able to figure out what I want after shooting this for a season or two. Have the same rifle in .223 for a couple of years and it was an nice rifle. Good to hear that I'll be the limitation when shooting it.

Well, the new format has dredged up this bit of history. Now shooting a Win-Miroku High Wall in 38-56, a C. Sharps High Wall in 40-65 and an original Low Wall in .22LR. Have owned two other Win-Miroku High Walls (.223R and 32-40) and an original High Wall in 32-40. Sold all three as there was no use for the .223R and the 32-40 will not knock over the rams. No Schuetzen matches within a 4-hour drive.

Just thought you would like to see your ex 32-40. Worked with Steve Earle and got a basic mount for the rifle that uses the original holes, the mount was then further modified by me ( milled the front mounting block to a 6 degree angle ) to account for barrel taper. The scope is a Tasco 708 from the 1960s it is huge.

Those Tasco scopes are indeed huge...but usually very clear...just eat your Wheaties!  The prices on them are generally affordable, they are under-appreciated based on who made them!   Grin

They are nicely made, sealed and really clear, but people have caught on to them and the prices are going up. This thing is bench rest only, really too heavy at my age, to hold up.

Very nice. Thanks for posting. Glad it is working for you.

I use an older Japanese internal adjustment 36x Tasco for my benchrest rimfire shooting. Excellent value scope.

Shot my Win-Miroku 38-56 in our 200m 'all offhand' silhouette match today. Great rifle after having the trigger touched up by Lee Shavers. Think I'm finally getting offhand figured out.
