Need Help With Small Action I.D.

Hi all,
I am trying to get some information on a small action that I just purchased. The action was listed as a Martini Cadet but I don't think that is correct, any help will be greatly appreciated! This action has been bead blasted so all that is left is the ser #. I am attatching a rather poor picture but should you need better I can and will supply more. Thanks in advance and God bless. cordell

Hello Cordell,

Are there any Proof Marks on the action body or the breechblock?

I don't think it is an English made action, the lever design and the trigger width are very unusual and I cannot recollect seeing any British made Martini actions having these features, and I've been around the shooting scene for over half a century.

Perhaps the Double D or Martini Belgium will be able to assist, what they don't know about Martini's isn't worth knowing.

Cordell:

Can't help you with your question, but I'm glad to see someone from here bought this action.  I looked at it, but it seemed to need more work than I was willing (or able - my skills being on the down side of limited) to undertake.

What do you intend to do with it?

Hi Harry,
I just purchased this action and as a matter of fact it hasn't even arrived yet. However in the write up the seller states that it had been bead blasted so I am assuming all but the ser# has been removed. I purchased this because of the unique way it mounted to the stock, and the flat spot and latch on the lever!... As far as DD and MB, I have already posted a similar picture on The Martini Henry Forum. If you come up with any other ideas please let me know, I would be most interested. Thanks and God bless. cordell BTW I am right at the half century mark with guns as well (if I leave out my teenage years Smiley....) TC&GB...cordell

Hello Remington40X,
I did a bunch of soul searching before I purchased this as well. I have 2 Martini's in the works right now and did not know if I wanted to take on another project at this point.

I really will have to look at the action before coming up with a caliber, however if it is in the Cadet range I will probably go with a Hornet or similar due to having an existing .224 barrel. However if it is what I think it is, and it turns out to be one of the early civilian target rifle actions I may just go with a little stiffer cartridge.

As you already know this is going to take some file work and maybe even light milling, the bad part is this will eliminate the light engraving but what can you do????

What did you havre in mind for this little fella??????? Take care and God bless. Rick

The more I look at your Martini action the more I think it was made to shoot a very light recoiling round. possibly just .22 RF although until you get in it your hands it won't be apparent if it was Rimfire or Centre Fire block.

The reason I believe it is for a small/light calibre is the design of the sides at the front end of both upper and lower tangs. On your action there is a radius where the tangs meet the action. There's no flats on either side of the tangs that would help the stock soak up recoil.

IMO any cartridge with more than a modicum of recoil would simply split the stock. There's simply nothing at the rear of the action to allow the transmission of recoil directly into the stock. The tangs look more like wood splitting wedges. I'm not being picky, just pointing out what I can see.

Cordell

Just found a quick sketch I made a number of years ago for a little martini action with Belgium proof marks I was barreling for a freind.  The original barrel was chambered for a .38 caliber centerfire cartridge and he was shooting .38 Short Colt cartridges in it.

The lever location and pin locations are very similair to the action in your photograph.  The sides from the sketch appear to be slightly lower just back of the reciever ring.  The action was 0.990" thick and the side-walls were 0.150" thick.  The action was striker fired.

The important thing about this action was that the breach-block was supported only by an 0.185" breach-block screw.  It was not supported at the rear by the action body.

Friend wanted it barreled to .22 Hornet.  Because of the lack of support for the breach-block I changed the block to RF and barreled it to .22 LR.  We didn't believe the action to be adequate for the .22 WRFM.

Cordell,I believe this action came froma Martini Gallery rifle, and if you look at (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links) you will see one advertised  through a dealer here in Queensland Australia.I know the dealer and he is a good bloke .The rifle in question is one of three and I was thinking about it . It is advertised as 9.1 cal gallery rifle  and its sale i.d. is 1342. If you go to the site and select rifles it is only a few entries down the page. Good luck David A.
