Swiss Martini target rifle value and info?

Hi everyone, I'm new here, and trying to find some information on this rifle. I've googled my heart out, and I can't find a single picture that looks like this rifle. Sad Anyways, a neighbor of mine is going to donate this rifle to a museum soon, and he'd like to have an appraisal done for tax purposes, but he doesn't want to spend a couple hundred bucks on an appraisal, so I'm doing this for him. If you guys could give me any information about this rifle as far as its history, and value, I'd really appreciate it. I've included all the pictures I have, even the duplicates, because I don't know if any one picture has something the others don't. Thanks guys!

It is a fairly common style of Swiss target rifle normally found in  10.4x38 or 7.5 GP90.  There was a seller on GunBroker that has sold a lot of them over the years and the prices seem to hang around $1000 give or take depending on condition.  I normally avoid giving value guesses because without the rifle in hand, a lot can be missed.  You didn't mention what it is chambered in or internal condition, but from the exterior it looks in above average for what has been sold, so something north of $1000 would be reasonable assuming there are no hidden internal flaws or bore damage.

I haven't been able to look in the bore, and I haven't got a clue what it's chambered for; I was told elsewhere that it was made between 1865-1888, does that sound right? According to that, they said it was probably chambered for the Vetterli rimfire cartridge...

While the majority likely were made in the late 1800s, the style was made well into the 20th Century and many if not most of the earlier ones were reworked to the GP90 round as these were working competition rifles and were still considered competitive when the GP90 round was adopted.....A new or reworked block and new barrel being considerably less expensive than a new rifle....and there being little doubt that the Martini action was strong enough for such a jump in pressure.  Since these were assembled by numerous individual makers, there is no central data base of how many were made when.  Research on the particular maker may give a better idea as to when the rifle in question was made and/or converted if in GP90.

If you go onto Gunbroker.com, Auctionarms.com, Gunsinternational and Gunsamerica and search Martini, you'll get a fairly large number of similar rifles included in the results.  On the two auction sites, most of those rifles have been for sale for months without a single bid being made, as nearly as I can tell.  Many of the rifles on the two straight for-sale sites have been there equally as long.

The target rifles in the Swiss/Austrian/German style are beautiful to see and the workmanship is marvelous in many instances, but sadly the market for such rifles in the U.S. is extremely limited.  They bring a small fraction of what it would cost today to duplicate them.

All that being said, compare the level of ornamentation of yours to the ones being offered.  That won't give you an appraisal, but it should give you a range to use as a reality check.

I have a rifle almost exactly like the one you have pictured, in fact i have 3 swiss martini rifles.  my oldest one is like yours but i also have 2 made in the 1921s.   I would say the value would range from $900-$1300 in a well advertised auction as long as the bore on this rifle is clean. i paid 900 for mine but the wood on this one is nicer and the blueing looks a bit nicer as well.  Please tell your friend that i would be very interested in buying this rifle.  These rifles deserve to be be shot and used.  It would be well taken care of and cherished and feed carefully hand loaded ammunition.  Let me know what he says.   - Larry

Larry, I can tell him, but I can almost tell you now he won't be interested. He actually gave me an old K98k, and when I told him that I couldn't just take a rifle as a gift, and I asked to pay him something, he told me, "one day, friend, you'll learn that there's more than money to this life." He wants this rifle to be on display for many people for years and years to come. I will still let him know, though.
