shot rams at 500 mtrs with paper patched bullets

Yaahoooooo... Grin

Took my paper patched rounds to the range to get sighted in on
chickens, pigs, turkeys, and rams.  Took about two hours to get
the vernier sights readings "right" on the cross sticks and elevations recorded.

The big ol 545 grain pure lead slug can really "clang" a ram at 500 meters.  It's a kick to fire the shot and about a second later hear the "CLANG".

No one in the local BPCRS game is shooting paper patched bullets so
my spotters, who were BPCRS shooters were really impressed.   So was my shoulder.   My recoil 1/2 vest is fine for off the bench but didn't work so well prone.

Didn't try to run the targets was only sighting in.   Now, for fine tuning and practice Smiley

Sounds like a lot of fun. I am hoping to get to a BPCR match next month. I have never tried it but I did shoot IHMSA as a teen with my dad. That was nearly 30 years ago. I told him about BPCR matches and it peaked his interest.

I think it will be a lot of fun to give it a shot.

Yes Sirree Bobtail Short!  There is nothing like hearing "BOOM......Clank!"
Last Saturday I regulated my sights on my 45-70 Peabody, and we fried like a pieces of bacon.  Very hot & humid by 11AM.  But I did get my sights regulated, in spite of the rifle getting so hot I could barely handle it.  Very pleased with the rifle's accuracy, and this Saturday June 26th, I'll shoot in my first NRA sanctioned BPCR Silhouette match in Pascagoula, MS.  Based on my score, I'll get my NRA classification, and then I'll be ready for the Nationals at Raton NM in July. (bucket list thing for an old guy).  Shooting at paper is neat, but there is nothing to compare to the "Boom.......................CLANK!!!!" , and then see the ram topple over backwards!    Tim   Grin Grin Grin

First time I tried paper patch bullets at that distance.

The  Ram Silhouette 26.75” x 32.75" and it weighs quite a bit so
the bullet is both capable of holding a decent group at distance and has tons of knock down.  It will certainly work for my upcoming buffalo hunt.

500 meters is 1640 feet away or slightly more then a quarter mile.
It sure appears tiny through the Soule sight.  The mirage was such
that all I could see thru the front lollipop was a blur.  Heat index was in the 90's and topped out at 105.  Barrel did get hot towards the end.

However, got the range on all with 21 rounds or 5 shots on each.
Usually took 3 to walk it in and 2 to confirm.

I'm wondering if the classic 405 grain GG bullet might work at 200 meters or 656 feet.   It's a great 100 yard deer bullet.  Worth testing.

You should plan to attend the Quigley Rifle Match in Forsyth, Montana next year.  Father's Day week to practice, free dry camping, $20 entry fee, and you can shoot out to 800 yards.  There are quite a few who paper patch there, you can learn a lot.

It's not a bad idea to have a seperate Chicken load for the offhand leg.  It does have to be accurate though Chickens are not large.  400's recoil a lot less than 500 plus bullets.

Paper patching is fun to try but if shooting a lot of BPCS most people use bullets in quantity that is difficult to produce with patches.  Plain lead bullets win most matches probably because that's what most people use.

On the clank when they hit.  All sorts of formulas and programs to tell you a bullets effectiveness. They are fine but the way bullets knock over rams tells you what hits hard and what don't.  When I first started shooting HP Silhouette using a 30,1906 168 gr Match King it would not always knock over the ram. Rarely saw a 45 bullet fail in BPCS.  They can  fail to knock it off the stand but not often.

I've seen rams fail to go over when the wind was really strong coming from behind them. Whether this was from the wind on the ram or the wind affecting the bullet or just coincidence I can't say, but I've seen it. I never had any animal fail to go over when I hit it with a 410 g bullet in a .40-65. I have seen a .38-55 fail to knock them over but not often.

Saturday the 26th I shot in my first NRA sanctioned match, and man, what  a learning experience.  Chickens were, well, chickens.  Lots of close misses, but that's all.  Pigs & turkey's weren't so hot either, but then it dawned on me that I was not watching the front sight level bubble.  Shots low and left or right.  Easy to cant the rifle.
I really felt like a DA.  Typical for a beginner I suppose.  Time for the rams at 547 yds., and it was back to shooting basics, including watching the bubble.  9/10 hits, with the #8 ram getting grazed on his top line, but that will not take a ram down!  A 45 cal. 545 gr. bullet will knock over a ram when he's hit in the "unmentionable".  Yep, I had a great time and the people in Pascagoula, MS are great folks.  Next match September 25, and it should be cooler.  I'll be there!    Boom...........clank!       Tim    Wink

Very true.  They write that each girl in the sharps factory could patch a 1000 bullets a day.    I can't.

Let's see, for me...cast up about 40 to 50 in about 2-3 hours.
Next size, weigh, and reject...maybe more then an hour.
Cut and trim patches, another couple of hours.
Patch bullets, another couple hours.
Allow to dry 24 hours.
Smear lube on patched bullets and allow to dry 24 hours.

Since I spread this out over different days and times, and do it when time permits, I'd guess it takes me about a week to get 50 rounds ready to load.    I think it takes me couple of hours to load the rounds.

Heck, with gg bullets, you can buy 'em prelubed and have them loaded in a couple of hours.

BIG difference in time spent.  Paper patching is for those who have patience.

Merle, and the next day at the range, ole Mother Nature is going to necessitate some sight changes.

Here's some MOA templates when she does:

Most important thing when shooting Silouette of any kind is your notebook with zeros in past matches and pratice sessions. Next most important thing is your spotter.  They ought to give two prizes for winners one shooter one spotter.

A good spotter working with somebody who will do what he is told can win matches.  Hard head behind the trigger or somebody who can't adjust his sight the way he is told can't win anything. With Iron sights and the recoil there is no way to tell were the bullet went when your gun goes off. If your are sure of your call and the rifle shoots to call it's OK but not nearly as good as if the strike is confirmed by your spotter.  Shooter can't catch conditions changes on his own either.

Bad spotter you might as well stay home. I rememer the guy at our club that would yell "wow you missed that one" m Ranges are different some with the berm way back high misses over the back can look like under the belly. Chickens with poor berm contrast have to be called by the way the critter flys off the bullet

It's against the rules in Silhouette but old days across the course coaches would even twist the shooters sights for them, all the guy laying down had to do was hold center and squeeze the trigger.

Reliance on the spotter and lack of a good one is one reason I gave up BPCS for Schuetzen. Schuetzen your sighter target takes his place.  I still shoot smallbore modern Rifle Silhouette without a spotter but go to a major match we always team up and spot. Our Club host the State Cowboy Lever Gun Silouette match next weekend and I was drafted to spot for one of our shooters he is a possable winner and we work together pretty good.

I always mark his strike on a spotting pad and give him distance from center in MoA and using the Clock to refrence location. Other than indication of wind changes or when 15 seconds remaining never say anything else, he makes his own sight corrections I don't tell him which way to turn the knob.

It's always interesting to look at the MOA of those targets
and realize how small they are.   I think at the last BPCRS
shoot a newbie got 2...total.   I'll attempt to beat his score...in both directions   Wink

Thanks for the template

I need two things....a dedicated spotter
AND
a really decent spotting scope.

I'd like a kowa but the local dealer for them went out of business.
Recomendations welcome.
