System Ideal Schutzen Rifles

I have two System Ideal Rifles, a center fire and a rim fire. Both are in excellent condition, with the exception of the rim fire has had the barrel replaced and the butt plate modified to meet old NRA match rules, is my guess.

I don't know how rare the System Ideal is so, I'm interested in finding out if there are others out there.

My center fire was made in 1924 and has a Tyrolean type stock in the "normal" 8.15x46 caliber. The 22 rim fire has a round G. Titherington of Stockton, CA barrel on it but, it's only 20 inches long. I believe he was a noted small bore guy of the 50's and 60's. Does anyone have any info on him?

I've had both guns a part including the breach blocks so, I know a lot about how they are made but, I would love to know more about they're history.

Maybe I'm wrong about the system type. I bought them 25 years ago. Here are pictures of them. Note the hinged breach block on both of them. Hope someone can help identify them and I would love to more info on them. I don't think the stock on the 22 has been modified but, it dosen't quite fit the norm. The barrel weight that's on it, I put on to bring the weight up for offhand.

Titherington's a name I have not heard in quite a while. Maybe some 30 years ago. He was a man of quality craftsmanship. Last rifle I had seen was a 6 1/2 Rigby Ballard converted to .22. If memory serves me correct he was all about .22's, but I'm thinking back in the 30's or 40's. He was a contemporary of CC Johnson.

Thank you, thats about what I heard when I bought the gun 25 years ago from some old timers around hear but, I never heard any details about him. Do you know if there was any talk of him and Freeland being friends or competitors?

Titherington, as mentioned was one of the men in the 30's and 40's. This is the first single shot I've seen that he did. He made many of his own single shot bolt receivers paterned after the Win 52 and used Win. 52 bolts. He did it all as far as rebarreling, stockmaking and even sights. Unfortunately there is painfully little written about him.

Thank you for that information. Do you know if his chamber dimensions different that the std match chamber? I know freelands were. I had a reamer made that is some what like freelands but, added my own things to it.Are there any American Rifleman articles on him that you know of? Or any books with references of him?

You might ask Michael Petrov on the Doublegunshop.com BBS about Titherington.  Although he specializes in pre-WWII custom makers, he's a fountain of information on relatively unknown makers of many eras.  Worth investing a few minutes and some electrons in the question.
