Firstly may I thank Gungadoug for kindly supplying the photographs of his rifle that I requested. See Sales and Wants adverts.

He requested that I put these pictures up on the ASSRA Forum for other people to see. The rifle looks to be in excellent condition, especially when you consider it's age.

Wal Winfer in his series of books on British Falling Block Single Shot Rifles shows some pictures of this rifle and relates the claim that it was once (by an expert in the use of this rifle) fired 60 times in one minute. That's a record I'd hate to try and break with any single shot action rifle of any design. Thanks for the pictures Douglas, they're much appreciated.

Harry.

Can't seem to attach more than one picture at a time, don't know why. At least some of them worked. Sorry Doug. I'd buy it myself if I had the cash.

    Gungadoug :

Thank you very much for sharing your images of the Soper rifle, with the assistance of Mr. Harry Eales, for our viewing pleasure.

I am sorry that you were treated so shabbily by some very cheeky fellow/s over on the "For Sale" heading, and I want you to know that the majority of us are not so ignorant to treat another fellow shooter in that manner.

I also, want to wish you much success in finding a buyer who will appreciate the rifle you are offering.

Harry or Doug, does the breechblock rotate out of its "race" to the right as I see what looks like a screw through the right side of the receiver that the breechblock would pivot on.  The pictures of the patent looks like the breechblock slides up and down (falling block).  Has anybody ever seen the Webley Wylie and does it work in a similar fashion.  Doug, you certainly have a rifle that warrants some discussion.  Nice. Thanks to some of the more Ah-- oh well, thanks! So, the Soper has a hinge pin on the right side, all swings up from there. Hammer cocks, extractor extracts, then ya stuff in another, lift the lever, and fire. The timing is amazing, and the 60 rd. was likely acheived because of this-- if I hold the trigger back, and ride the lever up, the breechblock will lock just before the hammer falls. So- mash the lever, insert ctg, pull trigger, all is well, but you certainly can't see sights thru that block!

I would like to say that I am disappointed in the response that my post generated. The disclaimer on shipping IS my option, and since the different legal aspects, and the possible trouble as a result, are going to land on my shoulders, I feel I have the right to refuse shipping at my discretion! No offense intended, but darn it, if I don't want to ship to wherever, I can sure as heck do so!! I take offense at someone looking for a soapbox hijacking my ad! There are more suitable means of venting.
       Thanks, Doug

FWIW,
For fast-firing, operation was supposed to be as follows, starting with breech open:
- load cartridge
- pull trigger (closes breechblock and fires cartridge)
- push down sidelever (opens, extracts and ejects)
- start again with step 1

As trigger and operating lever are pretty close together, 1 hand can operate both without moving around  while the other hand loads the rounds into the chamber.  Mind you, that 60 round test was probably with the rifle in a rest, unaimed.  Even then, quite an exceptional peformance though...

Any seller of anything has the right to limit where they would prefer not to sell anything, I guess that is a given right.

Nuff said.

I think  J. pickup just don't get it.
Both sellers and buyers have "rights" to buy and sell or to NOT buy or sell to who / where they want. What is the problem with that.
