LynnF,
Maybe you better decide first, and then inform us whether you intend to breech seat bullets or fire fixed ammo. I think you will find that all the short cartridges that are being recommended fire breech seated bullets in order to get the performance talked about.

Irascible,
I plan to breech seat. I have ordered a Shilen barrel, a Hoch 322100 mold, and brass. Although I've loaded black powder cartridges for a good while, this type load is new to me. I appreciate all the advice you have.

Lynn F short case 32's are very suitable for 200 yard target shooting and in fact are probably the best solution at that range.  Paul Shuttleworths advice is as good as any out there and he likes the 32/20 case.

In theory it would be no better or worse than the other short case 32's like the Miller or others made from 357 mag cases and they do very well

Like I said before the only reason to use the older longer cases like 32/40 is they are traditional and guys that shoot traditional style rifles like to keep there outfits all traditional. Others shoot fully modern outfits with all the newer developments looking for best performance.

In practice and this is my opinion only the modern guns are more accurate but not enough to break away in score from a good shooter with a traditional outfit in 32/40.

End of the day it's the man behind the gun.

Thanks Boats.
We are of one mind when it comes to tradition. Paul Shuttleworth said that if I decided I wanted a .32-40 that this barrel could be reamed to fit that cartridge. We'll see.

Lynn,   Two schools of thought or at least two approaches to the 200 yard plain base lead bullet game have evolved over the years of modern competition.  especially from the standpoint of the off-the-bench shooting---though offhand shooters have their own variation in orientation.
one group is more oriented to a more "traditional" approach,  the other is more oriented to achieving the maximum potential accuracy ---minimum group size and or maximum scores.    Actually its like two ends of a continuum with all shades and flavors along the line.  most of us probably fall somewhere in the center portion.

A more traditional (though I hate to use the word) shooter might be more comfortable with a more traditional case design---in this case--no pun intended--the old historic 32-40 and its variations.
A more "progressive" shooter might want to take advantage of modern case design, powders, internal ballistics etc etc.    The same kind of thought applies to choices of rifle configuration,  actions, barrel lengths, stock designs, sight systems and all the rest of the shebang.

I'm not one to make a judgement,  like I said I'm one of those middle section guys.  NOW --- IF---I was a good enough shooter,  maybe shooting in the middle 240s on a regular basis,  I might be tempted to go a bit more "progressive" to win an occasional 250 match or two.  However I've gotten sidetracked into the offhand side of the game and now I'm straining to try to break 200. I see what you're saying. I suppose the type rifle/cartridge will be somewhat determined by the group we're shooting with. I don't know of a Shuetzen group around Dallas, Texas but would be interested in finding one.

Think you will find a good group or shooters around New Braunfels Tx. Have a look at his link.  They have there own rules down there, in fact there is a lot of regional and even global variation with Schuetzen.

I worked out of Houston for 6 months one time and the guys over at New Braunfels treated me real nice shot with them several times.

To DWS's point offhand it makes less difference traditional vs modern than bench rest. In fact I am not sure a modern Schuetzen has any advantages fired from the offhand position. I compete against full on modern rifles and when they beat me it's me they beat not the rifle.

Bench it does make a difference but it's not just the cartridge, combination of stock design heavy short barrels more powerful internal adjustment scopes etc make it difficult for a traditional rifle to compete.

Way I see it If somebody is going to compete bench might as well go whole hog instead of using say 36x modern scope and holding yourself back with a long 32/40 case half full of powder. That's only my opinion though

WinkI received a new CPA Stevens Model 51 form Paul last October.
It is chambered in the CPA 32-20 round. I also received a Darr mold, 208 grains @ 25 to 1 mix. This little rifle is BOSS.. It is so much fun to shoot. The recoil is almost nonexistent. Brass is not hard to find, at least not right now. I would recommend the CPA 32-20 round to anyone..

I'll muddy the waters a little more. First decide where you fall on the Tradition scale of single-shot shooters. If you fall more on the traditional side go with the 32-40. If you are looking to see how accurate you can make a falling block rifle shooting plain based lead bullets you may want to look at one of the .357 based cartridges they offer advantages. They will not make a consistent 240 bench shooter a 250 but they may push you to a clean target if you are a consistent 249 shooter. There are different ways to skin the cat if you have chosen the 32-40. Rocky mountain cartridge makes a reduced capacity case. It is a turned brass case with a straight hole bored down through the middle. this gives a powder chamber very similar to what you end up with in the .357 family of cartridges. One word of caution the reduced capacity cartridges give the higher pressure characteristics of the of the .357 based cases so weaker actions are not appropriate for this case.

40 Rod

Refresh my memory on bench rest, was there a very good or perhaps best ever group shot recently with a 38/55 ?

Andy Z. and the New England crowd perfer the 38-55 for bench. Andy has shot some pretty good groups with that cartridge. maybe he will weigh in here.

I guess we are wandering off-topic, but . . . . 38-55, as I recall, was the schuetzen calibre of choice back in the days when guys fired one shot then waited for their next turn, and offhand to boot.  when more extended strings of fire became more popular, for some strange reason, they started switching to the lighter 32-40 and its variants.  It might be that the advent of smokeless powder had a part to play as well.  I'd guess that the 38-55 would work better that a 32-40 with BP.
Maybe the more modern 32-40s with long heavy-for-diameter bullets and faster twists are an improvement over the classic/heritage 32-40 set up, I don't know.
I selected the 38-55 for my centerfire bench rifle basically because it is a bit less wind sensitive than smaller lighter bullets and erratic "conditions" are a major factor at Etna Green where I do most of my shooting

DWS to your point on 38/55 vs 32/40 and offhand.

I think It's all about recoil and fatigue.  I find shooting the Hudson match with the 38/55 it takes more effort than same match with the 32/40.  This from experence with the same gun switch barreled. Basic rule in any firearm competition has always been lightest recoiling cartridge that delivers the required ballistics is going to score higher.

As the rule relates to Single Shots ? Depends on the match. Under ASSRA rules you could wait out conditions and take 3 days to shoot 100 shots, if so fatigue is not going to be a big factor with the 38/55. I don't know since I usually go right though the targets, probably to the detriment of my scores.

Our Club's Ram Bash we have to shoot in turn 3 shooters side by side one right after the other in 10 shot strings.  Afternoon of that including a dozen sighters and perhaps a shoot off  I know I have shot something end of the day using 38/55 & 300 gr bullets.  I am pretty sure the course of fire and recoil is why the 45/70 shooters never win that match.

I suspect offhand a 7mm or 28 caliber is going to have an advantage something with a pre charged short case  bullet and twist optimoal for the cartridge breech seated.

In fact if somebody was at the absoluete top level and wanted to win single shot matches the rifle to have would look like this.

Good strong action with center hammer and fast lock time. Nice triggers with a short fat barrel weight to suit what the shooter can handle, more the better.

Modern internal adjustment 36 X scope. Stocked to suit the shooter with upright head positon high comb and deep prongs to the buttplate Palm rest adustment set for straight line weight transfer rifle to hip bone no curves or deveation.

My opinion anyway

There is little to no difference between the accuracy potential of the 32-20 and 32-40. The advantages are availability of brass and smaller likelihood of double charging.
Since the 32-20 is generally used with a 30 caliber barrel, and since 32-20 brass is short and thin, why not get a 30-30 barrel? Brass is cheap and easily found, there are many 30 caliber molds available, the caliber is as accurate as a 32-30, and avoiding double charging is a matter of technique.
