what would a fair price be for a stevens  model 44 in 25-20 be worth at auction. one coming up next weekend and wondering if i should be interested in it.  what should one look at for condition of the linkage.  is it strong enough for today powders etc.  is brass readily available .. suggestions /help would be good

Slumlord 44 is right on the money , not only with the 25-20 in the M 44 but any of these older rifles.  Most are not up to currant standards for strength or performance but brass is usually available so are dies but both cost more.  The up side is if you don't mind putting yourself out a bit you can have a lot of fun playing with these older guns both on paper and on game.  How was it done 75 to 100 years ago--- get one and find out.  What is it worth ???    What are you willing to pay!!!

Another thing to consider....I passed up several stevens 44s in 25-20 ss about 15 years or so ago that were in the 200 to 300 dollar range. The price will go up. If you buy one now and hold on to it, even for just a few years, you will get your money back and then some if you don't buy stupid. I would bet that firearms values have fared better than most other investments. And the may not be effected by the soon to be coming 3.8% investment tax!
