I need a Ruger #1 action for a project.
To get some kind of idea of what to pay, can anyone please tell me how to find out on Gunbroker what the rifle was actually sold for?

You have to have an account with gunbroker.  Then, on the search page you can select completed auctions.

No hassle opening an account there, I get about one email a month from them.

Yup, I had an in with them for twenty years until about 2 1/2 years ago when they decided that I was "excess"...

Don't recall what they were selling for, but as I remember, the barreled actions at retail were only about $25 or so less than buying a complete rifle...all heart big deal on Ruger's part.  And even then, you could pick up a good used rifle on the open market for much less than dealer price on the barreled action.  Brownells dropped them from the catalog around three years ago, and the ones left were several years old, hence the oddball calibers on what was in stock.

Well, I'm back from the show and Ruger No. 1s were in short supply.  This was a big show, billed as the largest in the Southeast.  I saw three No. 1 rifles.   

An early red pad gun in .243, very nice wood like you see on some of those old ones, it looked to have been well used but well taken care of, $650.

A new looking 45-70 for $1,025.
A .416 Rigby (with 5 rounds of ammo) for $850.

There were a couple of No. 3 rifles there that I already regret not buying.  They both looked new, one in .223 for $450 and one in 30-40 Krag for $600.  Somebody had drilled a hole in the forend of the Krag for a sling swivel stud.  That was my excuse for not buying it.

Lots of intersting singleshots but nothing that was worth the asking price to me. A slew of Stevens, original Sharps, a Remington Hepburn, a pickup load of Trapdoor Springfields. Did not see a single Winchester singleshot, more nice old Winchester and Marlin leveractions than I've ever seen in one place.

+1 to 38_Cal.  That price on the .223 Number 3 would correspond to the price of just about any other action alone.  JMHO, but that's the view from where I sit.

Those of us who are poor, cheap or just frugal may not understand the mindset of those who see something they want, have the cash to pay, and don't really care what it costs.  I think this is the buyer that a whole lot of the sellers at gunshows and the online auction sites are looking for.

As I walked around the show yesterday I saw at least a hundred rifles that I would have liked to own.  There was not a single rifle at the show that I couldn't have written a check for and not really missed the money.  I didn't see anything though that I thought would give me as much satisfacton as the asking price in cash money in my bank account.

Except, I am seriously sad that I didn't buy that $450 Ruger.  It's a two hour drive up there and I would probably head that way if my wife was home to go with me.

    The web site for Guns International, which may be accessed at (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links) has a directory for available items.  If you scroll down to the heading " Ruger Rifles Single Shot ", you will find that 60 rifles, either No. 1's or No. 3's are available for you to purchase.

    If, as you say, you " need a Ruger #1 ", you will have found it among the 60 Rugers listed for sale there.
