Seems like this comes up every so often.  When you mail out 2000 of ANYTHING bigger than a standard sized envelope you are going to get a few damaged ones, simply because of the automated sorting and processing equipment.  even if it is put in an envelope or a plastic sleeve it happens.

One of the aviation magazines I subscribe to went to the plastic sleeve recently ---it a much larger and very well funded publication with a lot of expensive ads---and my most recent copy came all gnawed up.

I KNOW that the past few Journal editors have periodically reviewed this  problem and the costs for an organization/publication of our size to go to a sleeve or envelope are prohibitive without a price/dues increase that would in and of itself cause membership reductions. Not everyone can or would be willing to pay the added costs

I assume that an occasionally damaged piece of mail is about par.  Now if there is a provable pattern of damaged periodicals being delivered to you, especially of they are ''topically related"--ie a pattern of gun or hunting magazines being damaged, but not others; run -- don't walk --to the Postal Inspection service.  If you are having a problem with other unrelated magazines being damaged take it up with the local or regional postmaster--a sorting machine may be out of whack.

if its greasy fingerprints, coffee stains, or fried chicken drippn' marks better buy your local carrier his own subscription.

When I get a report of that Journal is damaged I forward it to Keith Foster and he will send out replacements. There are a couple in every issue that arrive damaged. every once in a while there is an uptick in damaged issues I have asked on several occasions if the problem has become prevelent unough to go to a different shipping system i.e. sticky tabs or a bag. The answer is that the cost of doing either far outweighs the cost of mailing out a few replacements. If your journal is comming damaged you need to let us know, the crystal ball app on my phone is not working. If this is a bigger problem than we think it may be worth the cost to find another way to ship.

I have the printer running an estimate on what it will cost for some different mailing options. They offer a plain envelop or a poly wrapper. They do not offer the stickers, being in Wisconsin they have a hard time finding illegal immigrants to put the stickers on. Seriously in either case I would drop the wrapper and move the information on the inside of the wrapper to the magazine. When I get the costs I can take them to the board and they can decide if this fix is feasible and if a dues increase is necessary to sustain the Journal's new costs.  It has been over 25 years since the last dues increase and nothing has gotten cheaper.
