Fooling with my camera before cleaning the CPA  38/55 yesterday. 

I ought to be embarrassed by it's appearance, it is a working target rifle though. I put it into service May of 1994 and shot several thousand rounds per year Black Powder out of that barrel for some time. Use dropped off when Paul built a 2nd pure Schuetzen for me, was used as loner rifle for a few years.

From the log book this Douglas barrel has almost 15,000 rounds through it and shoots as good as the day it was new. This star was from a 40 shot gong match &  sighters plus practice just under 100 rounds fired.  290 gr LBT Spritzer cast 1/25 lubed with SPG. 16  Grs of 4759.  Looking at this think I will give it a detail cleaning.

Do you use the pinhead for all distances and size of targets?

Westerner It has a Soule on the rear. I take base zero on the front and work the rear back and forth as conditions change. Both Mike Stevens one of the last he made before passing away. Dick the barrel is slick and smooth the whole way. Never been re-crowned.  I don't go to hard with the rod just enough to wipe it clean.

MES I am trying to figure out the best front sight. That rifle has carried the largest Aperture I can get for years.  First BPCS Silhouette then Schuetzen.

However this match is different.  NRA 500 meter rams hung from chains at 200 yards. 40 shots in 10 shot strings 3 or 4 shooters in rotation so no delay or going to spotter targets. Easy target, hard to shoot well.  It takes 32/40 to be even considered for first few places. As far as we know nobody has ever hit all 40.  Long standing match at Fairfax Rod and Gun our club just picked it up this fall.  Sorry to say at Fairfax  years ago it replaced the Schuetzen match.

I shot the match twice with the aperture even though you can't see any light around the steel.  Was looking through the Aperture and picking my spot on the animal through the hole. This Sat 3rd time shot the match with a flat head post. It worked OK but was not very precise.  I don't know if I am going to be able to see that pin head against a black painted ram.  One advantage is it should have the same zero as the aperture if I want to change match day. The flat top post strike is about 2 moa lower than the Arp's it's intended to shoot bottom of the bull hold.

38 thinking bout just that. Some guys shoot this match with Cowboy lever guns and many have the front sight painted.

I went to a couple of gong matches at Abbotsford WI last year and could not imagine using a pinhead.  I use an aperture front sight. 
Targets are 15x22 inch offhand at 182 yards and 12 inch circle at 182 yards  X sticks.
All the following are X sticks
285 yards circles of 16” and 8”  
322 yards circles of 20”, 16”, and 8”
509 yards circles of 36” 24” 12” 

That 512 yards 12 inch circle looks like the dot at the end of this sentence through the aperture sight.  You have to shoot in the 30 plus range to place.  The winner last time hit 36. It wasn’t me. I shot a 30 and was 6th.

Sat the 6th I shot this match, what aw hoot, I'm afraid I'm hooked...
