what is ideal scope power for .22lr. benchrest

hello, I am looking for either Lyman supertarget, targetspot or Unertle for .22lr. benchrest out to 200yd. what power do you recommend? would 15X work? I have 10X. would 20X be better? afraid higher power would increase mirage effects.(or allow me to see it). this is going on a vintage 1930,s prone rifle..s.s. action.  thanks guys your the best.

If you intend to stay "vintage" then I'd go with a 20X or a 24X such as the Redfield 3200. In a modern scope, the Lyman V-24 is outstanding and if rules allow the Lyman 36X is a great scope although mirage could be a problem with the greater magnification.

It's not so much power as it is clarity and repeatable changes. Who cares if it is a 36x but not clear? Also, how repeatable are the adjustments?

At the minimum, I'd say 10x. The higher mag scopes do point out the mirage more though. The best of both worlds would be a variable, but that is not "traditional" but it is legal. I'd go something like 6-18x, 8-24x etc.

What is the rifle?  Given unlimited funding and search abilities, I could see a cute little low-wall bench gun with a 20 or higher power Lyman Super TargetSpot aboard.  Yeah, that would be sweet!  Cheesy

A modern internal adjustable scope may hold some advantages. but, can you hold your head up when you bring it to the range? For 22 you want clarity and light gathering. I would go with a 2" scope either a Unertl or a Mitchell. Better let a 2 1/2" Mitchell. For a more economical way to go look at the Unertl 2" ultra varminters. There are a lot of them out there in 15 power with target knobs. Then have it pushed the guys who do it usualy get about a 60% push that gets you to about 24X.

Oh, I forgot. We're spending someone elses money so I'd go with a $3000 Mitchell 2-1/2" scope too. Grin

I would go for a Weaver or Sightron 36X, until someone makes a good 80 power.   ledball

20 power Lyman Super Targetspot works great. I borrow a buddies 30# STS once in a while. I like it a lot but, have had trouble getting enough light through the scope in the evening hours.
I have Unertl's too but always seem to grab a Lyman. The optics seem brighter to me.

i currently have a lot of different scopes for different reasons.
nightforce, and sightron 500 meter f class.
the unertyl, lyman, litschert, for my scheutzen rimfire/ center fire.
a redfield 3200 for testing (24x). and an assortment of bambi ,and hog glass, will eventually get a night vision for the hogs.
any of tthe lyman, unertyl, litschert fecker from about 12x to 20 x work fine for rimfire.

i have tried 10x sts, 10x 2"unertl, 15x sts and settled on 36x leupold
yes it shows all kind of mirage but it gathers light, clarifies my aiming point and is easy to get up to.
mine has a dot -1/8 min- which covers the white at 100 and is outlined at 200. several 249s so far soooooooo....
the problem is the dancing girls in the mirage, very distracting
