What's this breech seater worth & who made it?

Guys,

Pictured below is a nice breech seater I picked up with a Browning 1885 High Wall BPCR which the seater does fit.  It's in great shape and very nicely crafted from solid brass, blued steel and a hardwood handle with brass trim.  There are no markings or identifiers on it.  I think I'm going to hang on to it, but was wondering who made it and what it's worth?  Anyone have any ideas?  Thanks.

Wayne

Laurie,

Thanks a bunch.  After you identified Russ Weber as the maker I found many other references on his seaters.

That was fast, how about this one, it's marked Ruger - 1 on one of the flats, anyone ever seen one like it. It's blued steel and set up for a 32 Miller Short/

I spoke with Russ Weber today.  He's currently getting $175.00 (shipped) for a breech seater like the one pictured in the first photo, which fits a .45-70 Browning or Winchester (Miroku manufactured) 1885 High Wall.  He indicated it would also fit an original Winchester 1885 High Wall or a close copy.

Also required are three fireformed cases and the largest diameter bullet that will be shot in the rifle.  Two of the cases (one as a spare) are fitted to the breech seater and returned with the seater.  If the 3rd case is not used it's returned with the seater.

Russ Weber's contact information is:

Being a complete novice to breech seating, after Laurie identified the Russ Weber breech seater, I ran some internet searches and went through a very quick crash course on breech seating.  One pretty good web site for a novice like myself to start with is (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links).

Now, with my new found knowledge, since Set_Trigger posted the photo of his seater, I have an observation I’d like to verify.  The Russ Weber seater is adjustable and uses an adjustable length plunger that pushes the bullet out of the case and seats it.

ST, I certainly can’t help in identifying your seater but am I correct in assuming that your Ruger seater uses a “plugged case” to seat the bullet?  Based on your photo it looks like it does, but I’m not sure.  In other words, to change depth requires a different length plugged case.

texasmac,
It's adjustable, no plugged case required. I have a Ruger # 1 in 32-40 and was wondering if some how this can be changed from a 32 Miller Short to the 32-40. There are no maker marks or names on it other than Ruger - 1, it's looks like it's very well made but I doubt very much if Ruger made it.

Set_Trigger here is a photo of my similar seater marked with only a #3 on handle and body for use with my #3 ruger in 7 x 1 1/2" Rimmed cartridge, have looked the tool over and it appears the case is brazed/soldered to the end of the tool, if anyone does know how to change these over without damaging the tool i'd like to know also  Smiley
Thanks MIKE-T

S-T, for the same action (r #1->R #1, or HW -> HW) all you have to do is make a spud of the proper length and having an end cap that is just under bullet diameter, then add the properly sized (and drilled through the flash hole for the shank of the spud) and you are good to go.  This assumes that the shank of the spud is threaded to be adjustable so you can unscrew it all the way and replace it with the new one.  This is also how seating depth is adjusted... screwing the spud in or out as needed.

OTOH, it is NOT always as easy to change from one action type to another, so f'rinstance, I have one for my high-wall .32-40 and had another for my Ruger #1 in the same caliber, as well as a third one for my Peregrine in .32/357 Dell.

MIKE-T,

Could the case possibly be screwed on to the end of the seater.  Not knowing how the Russ Weber seater was made, at 1st I could not figure out how the case was attached to the main body of the seater, so I decided to wrap a strip of leather around the case rim, grab it with a pair of common pliers and and see if it would possibly screw off.  It was quite tight but did unscrew.  The case primer hole had been drilled out and threaded.  Could your's be attached the same way?

That's  exactly the way mine is attached, inside the case there is a brass plug that screws on  a  rod and is adjustable for length, you loosen a set screw make the adjustment them lock it with the set screw.

texasmac, thought the same thing as I have other breech seaters, one like Russ Weber's and one that looks like a modified pop rivet gun, on both of them the case unscrews, tried to remove it from this one using a mini strap wrench and it would not budge. This one may remove, but I use it with my Ruger #3 in 7mm x 1 1/2" Rimmed and do not want to do anything to damage it as it works perfect with the bullet that fits the rifle!
Thanks for help, MIKE-T Smiley

I have one by Weber and another by a guy in California named DiMaggio which is made exactly like the Weber. On both the case is drilled and tapped. Lock Tite is used to secure the pieces. The application of heat will assist in removed the case as heat breaks down the Lock Tite.

Your second seater looks like an Andela. I have an old catalog of Jim's from the 80's he lists them for ruger #1 and 3s. He also made lube pumps that were made to tale standard Lyman / RCBS dies and standard commercial lube sticks. All of Andelas stuff worked well but it was a little big and kind of clunky. I don't know what happened to him I haven't heard about him in years. If it was an Andela it was probably modified by someone else to the 32MS as I think his work predates the 32MS wide usage.
