Breechseating verus Fixed ammo (Read 2287 times)

	A friendly conversation at the local gunshop the other day brings a questioin to mind, some shooter think breechseating is much more accurate as opposed to fixed ammo than I do. So Jim B, Keith F, Jeff S and any other shooter that has an opinion please respond. Question- at 200yds if you can shoot in the 25 ring breechseating , what would you think your best load could do with fixed ammo. I know there are a lot of variables but just in general what is the difference in inches at 200yd. ledball

	Best I've done with fixed is about three inches. The same rifle, a 32/40 with standard chamber for fixed ammo has scored 248 breech seated. So that's eight out of ten in the 25 ring which is 1 1/2" ? Joe.

	ledball, Are you OK? You know that Bass monkeyed with fixed ammo for years with little success. He built a gun on a Hall action with a special reamer he designed, (remember now, he started out shooting modern benchrest and did very well for years), turned necks, made dies, swaged bullets, etc, etc. It never shot for shit until Dale made him a breachseater for it and then he shot his first 250 at 200. If you take a rifle that shoots under 1" at 200 breachseated, and can get it to shoot under 2" with fixed, my opinion is that you have arrived. Dave Stahl is shooting fixed ammo offhand; he feels the points he looses on accuracy is made up by keeping his rhythm going.

	Someone at New Philly, Ohio used to fool with fixed ammo and would tell me he could shoot fixed pretty good just not good enough. Allow I've not tried fixed with a bench rifle, I might have guessed I could hold the 24 ring as "westerner said". I sure do remember our old friend "Bass". the day I was dumpster diving to find his 182 bench target is unforgetable. ledball P.S. I won't say who but the Bass [low] target did not hold-up, it has been beaten badly.
