The name rings a bell, I seem to recollect that he is mentioned in Gunsmithing by Howe, but I cannot lay my hands on my copy, I put it somewhere safe and can't remember where. (old age)

I believe he operated just after WW2 in the USA.

Joe Pfeifer was located in Roscoe, CA (later renamed Sun Valley).  His barrels were well thought of in the late '40's and '50's by a lot of West Coast shooters -including the "modern" benchrest gang.  In fact I believe one of the early group records was set by a Pfeifer barreled rifle.  (Have to look that up when I get home.)

I have a Ballard with a heavy Pfeifer barrel in 38-55 made about 1949.  The previous owner used it in ASSRA matches in the 1980's, and did very well with it.
