New Wm Malcolm scope

Anyone seen one? Used one?  Resembles a Lyman 438 Field.

I saw it in my new Midway catalog.

Scopes good, mounts suck big time.  Have the 32".  The mounts, especially the Precision Long Range Mount (PLRMT), is a joke, i.e., quality, precision, workmanship, metalergy, etc.  Made in China, not even a good paperweight.  Cost me $100 to have mounted and I had to pull it off.  Replaced front mount.  Looking to replace rear.  Cost me as much if I had bought RHO or Buffalo Arms(?).

Have a buddy , same thing. He had to have front or rear remachined to fit right....so I bought the MVA!  My gripe is the MVA rear is VERY touchy on elevation , have now seen a couple nice upgraded knobs about 1/2 dia X 3/4" with easily seen slash marks.  Something should  start to make them and sell em on the side. Good mounts, like all sights are expensive.  I wished I would have just used a Unertl, but I had to try and keep with era-style.  With a reproduction rifle, why not a repro scope?  Wish my eyes could tolerate the iron sight better. Shocked

Joe have two of the 3x Malcolm scopes, one mounted on a Winchester LW in 22K Hornet. I really like the looks of it mounted on the LW, as others have stated the mounts are not much, hard to adjust not very good quality etc. I use one CB load in my K Hornet and once rear mount was adjusted to shoot 1 inch high a 50yds, have not touched it, did put a touch of 222 Loctite on the threads just to make sure.

I like how clear the scope is to my old eyes and for what they cost it makes a great looking scope for a SS 22rf plinker or low power CF hunting rifle, overall I like them Smiley Smiley Smiley.

May try and make a new rear mount that adjusts accurately next winter if I finish all the other projects.

Great thread guys this answered a few of the questions that I had.
Have really been looking at the MVA but have been wondering on what mounts to get with the scope.

Can one of you guys post a good close up of the mounts? 

The 438s didnt have high quality mounts either but they did work.   

Is it the dove tail cut that wont fit Unertl bases?  Sloppy threads? 

Sounds like they must be made of pot metal.  Sad

Guys,
Check out my article titled, SEARCHING FOR A COST EFFECTIVE BPCR SCOPE SOLUTION at the link below.  There is a section titled, Evaluation of the Leatherwood in which I fully evaluated the 18" 6X model and mounts and also commented on the longer model.

What upset me the most was the arrogant, condencending "engineer" at LW when I tried to work with them and offered constructive criticism and suggestions. Angry  I'll probably never buy a product of theirs again.  But I must admit, I like the scope.

Texasmack. Have you seen these mounts? I picked up these and brass tube scope on a gun deal. Very well built, thought I'd use rear no click with my MVA 6X. Brass tube is 3/4"x33", Tasco.  Wish these were more readily available, lot finer adjustment over the MVA mount. Pete

They look like pretty good mounts, but there seems to be a spring and plunger missing that slips into the bottom section of the rear mount.  This is a little different design than the Unertl-type mounts, which uses a single  "offset" (45 deg.) "off-angle" spring & plunger to provide tension for both the vertical and windage adjustment knob.

They look like the early Lyman 5A rings/mounts before they changed to a single spring plunger @ 45 deg.

Skalkaho,

Before you install those mounts, be sure they provide sufficient MOA adjustment range for the length of scope and mount spacing you plan on using.  They may provide a "...lot finer adjustment over the MVA mount", but may not have sufficient range.

For example, if you are planning on using them with a 33" scope for silhouette competition I'd bet a bunch that they will not provide the necessary adjustment range for targets from 200 to 500 meters.

Look at the unertl style mounts that DZ Arms makes (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)
They are well made and have more "up" range than the original unertl/fecker style mounts.  They have the clearance for the longer scope of MVA.  I believe they are $350 a set.  One of the options from Buffalo Arms is the leatherwood scope with DZ Arms mounts and rib.  If you buy the mounts separate, you will also need to get the screw on Pope style rib for front mount.  Buffalo Arms has that two.  I do have a 6X leatherwood on by CPA .22 with Fecker mounts.  Optics seem to be very good.
