50-45 Cartridge for Remington Roller Navy.

Went to a gun show this Saturday up in Edmonton stumbled accross this little gem.  There were 5000 of them made for the US. Navy.
My question is after searching the net the way I know how I can't find a whole lot on this cartridge.  If any of you guys know the dimensions of this cartridge could you post it here or send me a PM.

The rifle is complete and in Very Good Condition.  I am tickled pink.

Not really all that sure yet.
The fella I bought it off of was shortening 50-70 brass and loading about a 330 Grn Bullet.
Want to do chamber cast to get a measurement.

I believe from what I have found on the internet that the brass is 1.337"

50 US Carbine is one I have never heard of.  Will do some snooping and see what I find and then compare the info.

Would this be the same as the 1870 springfield carbine???

A shortened version of the 50-70 Govt.   

I think it is but not really certain.   IF so, shorten 50-70 brass
and you are about there.  Cut case to 1.4", F/L size, Neck Ream, trim to length and chamfer.

Length 1.34
head dia  .565
Rim dia  .660
neck dia .536
rim thickness .068
case cap  55.43 grains of h20

400 gr bullet.

I have one. It is the 50-45. I ordered brass from the then Gain Twist company. I belive that Rocky Mountain Cartridge is the name of that company or at least that Dave has taken over the current incarnation of the brass making endeavor. The cases are marked 50-45. At the time, they listed both the 50 carbine and the 50-45 navy. 

The brass is very sturdy. CH 4D makes loading dies for it. That is who I got mine from through Huntingtons. 

This is a great and fun round to shoot.

More money and shooting the old obsolete guns seem to go hand and hand!! But once you're bit, you're bit!!

BTW, I used a rapine bullet mould most of the time. It was actually called his "smith carbine" bullet. IIRC it is 320 grns. It did very well at 100-200 yds for the short little barrel on the carbine!! and with the V notch-barelycorn sights!!

I only ever used BP in it. Never even considered smokeless. I used SPG lube and cereal box or vegeatable fiber wads. I have a punch and used to punch them out of cereal boxes, but when I started seeing the bags of 1000 for reasonable price it was WELL worth the tarrif!!

Ken,

Does our gun have the pin extractor at 6 o'clock in the block?? That is the original config for that gun. It is reportedly a big part of wh onl 5,000 of the original order of 10,000 were delivered. It would tear the rim of the old folded head cases and had weak extraction as a result of the design.

Mine is put together with one of the original barrels that was never used by the Navy...New Old Stock...I had it put on a Number One action with a side extractor. I wish I could have found the corrcet block but they are few. I love the gun, thought I rarely shoot it anmore. I used to shoot it at a local 200 meter off hand match for fun.

There ought to be a provision somewhere that when a member starts about a new rifle he has bought, built, or otherwise has in hand that he or she is to provide pics for the membership. I for one would like to see it. Frank

While it isn't my gun that started this thread it was the first gun I had built/I did build other than a trapdoor.

I will try to put a pic up of mine. Maybe I can figure out where I put the rounds and put a pic of one of them up, too. Shaort, fat little thing!

Saw one of the Remington Roller Navy's today at St. Louis gun show. Guy had $1500 on it. Prety nice gun. I have no idea what price should be. Is this  a fair price? I am thinking price was not bad considering rarity of the gun. Bore looked mint. Metal and wood not mint but very nice considering the age of the gun.

I paid 1500.00 for mine on the remington sight they stated a very good which I would say mine rates dhould go for 2500.00 to 3000.00.

Which when like stated above didn't seem that bad to me.
