Knitted Rifle Sleeves Treated w/ Silicone ? (Read 5725 times)

	There is a lot of written hype in catalogs about the benefits of knitted gun sleeves that are treated with Silicone. You may have seen them in Cabela's, but has anyone actually had positive results with keeping moisture and rust away from gun metal by using these products ? Creedmoormatch

	Have used them for several years now with no problems but then again we live in a rather dry climate. What I like about them is they do offer good protection when putting way too many rifles in the gun safe !!

	Creedmoormatch Bought several 2 yrs ago & put one on one of my Popes. Was on about one week when I checked the gun & the stock finish was starting to turn to glue. This stock still had original finish---? varnish. Have not used any sleeves since altho they may not affect newer stock finishes. Best, Bob

	I think if you try to add any finish or even touch up a scratch after using a Silicone treated sleeve, you will find the finish will not perform as you want. In addition, the silicone is very, very had to remove once it is on your stock. For these reasons, I do not use them. I wish someone would make cotton flannel sleeves with no treatment of any kind. 	FWIW: I do not allow anything with silicone in it in my shop, not even silicone caulking. Contaminated a shop once with silicone saddle oil. Adhesives (epoxy, etc.) would not work after that. Understand it is almost impossible to clean up. Probably extreme, but this is also standard commercial practice for shops that use adhesives. Chuck

	I am very much against silicone, won’t use it or allow it in my shop. Silicone is very hard to completely clean off, and can cause all kinds of problems for a restorer.

	Silicone is one thing to keep away from gold (plate) too.

	Hey Cat W ' ed; None of my rifles are gold plated, at least not yet. And since you clued me in on the potential problem with silicone, I won't give it another thought ! By the way, do they shoot more accurately if they're gold plated ? I would guess so. Thanks much, see you in Virginia Creedmoormatch

	Gold plating is too often used to plate the bead front sight - easy to pick up with the eye, but gives you a little bit different point of aim depending on which side the light hits the bead. BUT the epitome is the "gold" trigger. Same principle, if it's gold it has the best let-off and NO creep if it's gold.
