Bailey, I'm not too familiar with the Martinis, and I don't know if their bell crank extractor gives the spiffy two-stage effect of the Gibbs two lever scheme. In principle it can be made to do so, but I don't know if they ever bothered with the careful fitting needed to make it go.

The earlier Farq patent for a two-stage bell crank extractor requires a wiping action along the base of the block, and I can see it being balky compared with the two lever approach. It's British patent is shown in Kirton's book. I'm not surprised it's not encountered in existing rifles.

Appreciate the information. Patent is interesting. Tried something similar on a homemade Hepburn. Used the cam for primary extraction and added a leg to the extractor for the breech block to pick up after the cam. This gave a little more extractor stroke with a little more speed to eject. System works adequately, but not as well as expected. Not sure if it is the design or the execution causing problems.

Bailey, If I haven't said it before, That is a beautiful action. Great design and wonderful work. I wish you all the success in the world.

Here is a picture of the extractor and cam. The cam makes contact initially at the top of it's rear face, then accelerates the extractor by making contact lower.

Thanks for the pictures. That should work well.  The upper cam to start extraction then the toe to eject. A unique design that should be among the best.

Making a push to get this one finished. 

It's much better balance and lighter than I anticipated. The barrel is different than the one in previous pictures. It's a #2 contour Shilen, so it's a little lighter than the previous barrel as well. As is, it weighs 5 3/4 lbs. Balance point is at the front edge of the action. 

I ran a few rounds through it today and am very pleased with the function of the rifle.

Got her done! Scope will be in Wednesday, and will get it mounted and sighted in this week.

I will be donating one of these to the Dallas Safri club for the Jan. show auction. Same caliber, but with iron sights as well as the quarter rib.

Watching the progress on this rifle has been about the most enjoyable custom gunsmithing experience I've ever had.  What beautiful craftsmanship.  Artistry, really.  I'm envious of its new owner.

Al,

The firing pin is bushed from the front of the block, and is in-line with the bore. The hammer strikes the bottom end of a transfer bar that is hinged an equal distance above the end of the firing pin. On my larger action that I will be starting soon, I have room to put the tansfer bar hinge point below the hammers impact point. It will speed lock time and impart more velocity to the firing pin. Don't know that it makes any difference, but the transfer bar will be stronger and the pocket for it easier to machine.

Thanks for the kind words on the rifle. I shot it this afternoon at my steel hog silouhet at 220 yds. Off hand, put two rounds inside 3". I have the scope on it now BTW. A leupod VXII 1X4 20. Makes me happy to hear the impact on those steel targets. Wink

The firing pin  transfer bar relationship sounds very similar to the Ruger No 1.

Al,

It is very similar to the No 1. The hammer on my action strikes the bar at a better angle, and so requires less force. Hard to argue the sucess of the Bill's vision though. The no 1 is a great action.

Good Morning Bailey,

I was interested in the firing pin set up because I have one of the small Italian Fraser actions in 22 LR that I want to make a new breech block for and get away from the high angle firing pin.  The action had a lot of problems so I will only be using the basic receiver and will make the remaining parts.

I hope yo keep posting your work, it is a great inspiration to see your level of craftsmanship.

Where did you get your gunsmithing training?
