Last Thursday, I opened my gun safe for the first time since the earthquake on Jan. 9.  All the rifles were in a big pile in the middle.  Friday & Saturday at the range, I heard the same story from about a dozen guys.  If you live in earthquake country and have a gun safe or gun racks that will allow a long gun to move forward, you need to install some sort of retaining device.  Wooden slats or dowels that fit horizontally into a couple of holes or U-shaped notches might be best.  Bungee cords might or might not work.   

I have an open rack that had 5 rifles on it, all retained by a leather bootlace loosely tied at about forearm height.  That seemed to work pretty well.  If the quake wave had come from another direction, it might have been another story.
