Waterman, are you thinking Sarah Palin in a pink bikini wearing a Bavarian hat and drinking beer from a stein while moose hunting?

It's weird but doable.  Yes, I could go for that.  Smiley

There are some very expensive engravers out there, and some cheap ones too. The trick is to get the best value of quality and price.  I could get complete coverage in American scroll by one of the best engravers for about $1500.  I saw a highwall in a coarse scroll that I wouldn't pay a penny for on my rifle. I want about 50% coverage in American scroll with a diamond scroll in the center of the sidewall, on each corner and a tad on the top of the receiver.  I think it will cost about $400 for that by the engraver I've chosen.

Joe,

No hat & no bikini.  Plus I had in mind a lass a bit less maternal, not Mom x 5.  maybe no beer stein.  But that's the general idea.

I do not know anything about the various processes for reproducing art on metal.  Is there another process, other than formal engraving?

VOL717 - That's what I been look for... scroll at the corners, hollow diamond scroll in the middle, a single scroll on the top flats and tangs, and a little on the lever.  $400-500 good, $1400, not so good.  There' a local gunsmith whose son did engraving on a gunsmith school project - beautiful work. But he won't let him do it because they have so much regular gunsmith work in house they can't keep up and are constanly 2-4 months behind.  Maybe, one day... Roll Eyes

There is, was a fella I think in Nevada, Eric Gold??  He did game scenes that looked like photographs on steel. I tried to find him for
my son but failed.  Think I'll look again.

Sarah Palin maternal?    Grin  Old beggers cant be choosy I suppose.  Sad

I don't know who does the engraving on the Axtell Sharps for Carmen but he is really good.   I saw a few of'em at the Milwaukee NRA show a couple years back.   I'm not a big fan of animals;  a lot of'em seem a bit pretentious to me. But the ones on the Axtell rifles were really good.  looked like real hand engraving rather like high quality photo engravings.

On Axtells website they offer rifles engraved by WM Gamradt.  Dont know if he/ she is deceased. The Gamradt website is still current.

Gamradts website shows Axtell rifles they engraved.

I'm not going to engrave a high wall, but I have a Plain Jane Aydt that is begging for some scratching.  For a couple of years, I have been thinking of having the likeness of a fair young damsel sans clothing engraved on the unencumbered side of the action.  The engraving I have in mind probably transgresses into the realm of pornography, so I will not be posting samples.

I have never seen a rifle so engraved.  Is it done?  And is there an etching process that could be used?  And I'd request a PM if you know someone who might undertake such work.

Google up Torcoli engraving and be prepared to have your heart skip a couple beats. Along with Fracassi and Pedersoli who engrave absolute marvels of bulino masterpieces. Torcoli blends game and lovely ladies that is just breathtaking.

In my first post I told you what not to do. I guess I should tell you who to go to. If you want an animal in your engraving then the place to go is Ken Hurst. Ken’s animal work stands head and shoulders above everyone else. Ken gets them to look almost alive. If you are looking for scroll work, my first choice would be Mike Sawmiller. His work is delicate and looks to my eye like the kind of work that you see on the best English guns. His work on the 2009 raffle rifle was literally flawless. Another really good engraver is Tim George for a look at Tim’s work go to the American Custom Gunmakers Guild site and take a look at this years rifle Tim did the scratchin on it. For my own 44 ½ project I am going to use Mike Sawmiller.

Hey I would like to add my 2 cents if anybodies interested.  Look for the book "STEEL CANVAS" by Wilson. Theres a lot to see in there. Something to consider...We buy and use these old rifles because we like the lines and look of them. They are aesthetically pleasing to our eye. So in saying that, I would infer that you consider engraving in a style or period that the rifle was made in. It should look like an old firearm. If on the otherhand, new styling is cut into it, it will never look right. Just my humble opinion.

I have had Bill Gamradt do scroll engraving on several rifles.  I have not heard that he is no longer working, and he is fairly young (sure younger then me!) so I'd be surprised to hear that he is not.

If you have Steven Hughes' "Custom Rifles in Black & White" you can see one of the Gamradt projects in the final chapter on a '73 Winchester.

Engraver Terry Wallace died a few years ago.  He did superb work!

Here are two pictures of Kens' engraving for a gun that has gone to the dogs. A very nice combination of scroll and dogs.
