Yes, the #3 is the only one with a dished top on the receiver, but there were many #3's made without the dished top. All the very early ones had flat tops.
I've got two early flat top receiver #3 Ballards. They also had much heavier barrels. The later #3 got a lighter contour barrel, which required dishing the top to see the rear barrel sight in it's lowered position.
Not sure at what point in #3 production they changed to the concave top, but I do know all that are marked "Marlin Firearms Co." have concave tops. Haven't seen enough of the flat tops to get a good serial number cutoff on the change.

to tighten up the lever try a set of new screws. Lever pivot, lever link, and breech pivot. Those 3 should make a major difference. There should be no play on these screws. Should be tight.    Don

Jeeze--that one ought to be in Dutcher's book.  Before getting that book, I'd never even seen a #3 with DST.

Though nothing to compare with this gun, I've got a rather odd one--a #3F with a forged receiver, #3900.  Don't think it's anything really inexplicable--must have been a temporary shortage of cast receivers at the time this gun was assembled.  I think I remember reading somewhere that Marlin wasn't casting these in his own factory, but having it done at a nearby foundry; this might account for some irregularity of supply.

I wonder if BGI could have made the thick-base tang sights used by both Marlin & Winchester--they're exactly the same, except for base length.

John Dutcher states that Billings and Spencer did the forgings for the receiver and block. Is this incorrect?
Bridgeport Tool and Die made many sights for all the major gun makers in the northeast USA. Marlin, Remington, Savage, Whitney-Kennnedy, etc. all used front and rear barrel sights built by BTD.

Forgings wouldn't have been produced at a foundry, would they?  Does he distinguish between forgings & castings?  I'll check myself.

I've never heard of Bridgeport Tool & Die, but have long suspected that the big gun makers were outsourcing some, at least, of their sights; made sense economically, or they wouldn't have been doing it.
