           Where did the term "picatinny rail" come from--it looks every bit like a Weaver rail with more cross slots.   ledball

It's a Weaver-type rail to military specs...height, width, angles, slot length & depth and slot spacing, so that a sight or scope can be moved from one rifle to another (or moved fore & aft on the same rifle) and have the same relative position in terms of fit and eye relief.  If you look at Weaver and Weaver-type scope bases, rings, etc., they're all over the map on dimensions and slot locations, to where you may not be able to move a scope without moving the rings on it, or use one brand of rings on another maker's bases.  You can usually use Weaver type rings on Picatinney bases, but not always the other way.

38_Cal-Thanks for above info regarding the differeces between the two manufactured bases,often wondered what the differences were--Fritz

Do you want steel or aluminum, wide base or narrow base?  About 10" long, about 9" worth of slots.
