Who Was J.C. Higgins in the World of Shooting ?

Most outdoorsmen and shooting sports enthusiasts over the age of 40 have heard of J.C. Higgins !  My question is, who was he ?  Aside from being a "trade name" used by Montgomery Wards Inc, or was it Sears and Roebuck Co., was he an expert in the some area/s of hunting/shooting/reloading ?       Undecided         Undecided

here is your answer from "ask.com"

J.C. Higgins: 1908-1964

Many people ask if there was a real "J.C. Higgins" who worked for Sears. There certainly was. John Higgins began working for Sears in 1898 as the manager of the headquarters' office bookkeepers and retired as company comptroller in 1930.
"John Higgins" the employee became "J.C. Higgins" the brand name during a discussion in 1908 among Sears' executives of possible names for a new line of sporting goods. At this point, the story gets a bit murky, but Higgins' name was suggested and John Higgins consented to Sears use his name. Since he did not have a middle initial, Sears added the "C."

In 1908, the Western Sporting Goods Company in Chicago began putting J.C. Higgins on baseballs and baseball gloves sold in Sears catalogs. By 1910, the J.C. Higgins trademark was extended to cover footballs and basketballs. Later, the popularity of the Higgins brand—combined with the wider participation of American youth in sports—led Sears to place tennis equipment, soccer balls, volleyballs, boxing equipment and baseball uniforms in the J.C. Higgins line.

By the 1940s, J.C. Higgins represented all Sears fishing, boating and camping equipment. After the Second World War, Sears consolidated all sporting goods under the J.C. Higgins brand name and added it to a line of luggage.

The J.C. Higgins brand disappeared shortly after Sears introduced the Ted Williams brand of sporting and recreation goods in 1961.

If he was a shooter it's not known.  I checked a couple other sources and found the same basic info,  Ask.com was most complete and concise

All Almost of the stuff Sears sold was manufactured by main-line American industry---untill retail was china-ed by sam walton.

Sears would simply buy a production run and have their brands put on the product.  So depending on year and model your JC Higgins gun might be a standard Win/Rem/Marlin/Savage or whatever.   I'm sure somewhere someone has worked up a list of who made what.

On some items they would work up specs and bid out the product line but I think they stayed out of the gun design business and just private labeling do the work.   BTW Montgomery Ward, Western Auto and a whole bunch more did the same---seems like the Marlin 30-30-lever gun was a real popular item for this along with a number of shotguns.  I remember a local guy who had quite a collection of rifles and shotguns that were all private labeled.

I don't have a current one handy, but for several years Numrich/Gun Parts Corp had a several page cross-reference list in the front of their catalog so the customer could determine which private brand model corresponded to which major manufacturer's brand and model.  This made it possible to get repair parts most of the time, although some of the private brands specified proprietary variations on major model designs (for whatever reason.)  Cool

It has been said that one of the causes of High Standard's decline was that they became too dependent on the sales of their long guns through Sears who kept cutting prices in each year's contract.  They seem to have gotten to the point where they couldn't afford to make the arms for Sears but didn't have the sales to give up the contracts.  Undecided

As an aside, my first rifle was (and still is) a JC Higgins made by Marlin on their 80-series design.  Mine was the plain as a stick model with tube feed, but I later bought the stock and sights from a Deluxe Model and "upgraded" it to a much nicer configuration.  It was an all "bolt on" operation.   Cheesy

Didn't Sears own Meriden Fire Arms Co. in the early 1900's. I think they made their own shotguns and maybe 22's for a while. This was before J.C.Higgins.

... and that Higgins was there for the building of the "Bridge over the River Kwai," although he "escaped" before it was bombed (by planes, not a band of soldiers) according to the information he gave Magnum in a recent rerun I saw locally.  Of course in true Jonathan Quail Higgins fashion, this turned into a fading soliloquy as Thomas rushed off to catch the bad guys!

For the the FWIW department:  In the process of searching for something else I found that NBC is streaming a bunch of its old shows on-line so if you want to see all the Magnum PIs on your small screen go to

Numrich still has the crossovr list at their web site, and in their catalog. The Bluebook of Gun Values also has this info.
Sears did use many major maker's guns, but they also bid this stuff out every so many years, so a certain model might change makers, and you needed to know the catalog sub number on your Sears JC Higgins to get the right part. Might start out as a Model 101.1 and later be a 101.3 (just examples, not sure of the real numbers).
Sears also had a few of their own parts designs that they bought the patent for, and then sold the patent to one of the gun makers to build exclusively for them. A good example is the Model 90 Marlin over/under shotgun. This was a Sears patent that Sears brought to Marlin to build for them. Marlin agreed to build it, if Sears would sell them the patent so they could also sell it under their name. The old Marlin #1 & #2 external adj. scopes were also a Sears patent that Marlin bought to sell back to Sears.
