Sure doesn't look like lead in the picture.

In case anyone is interested, this Schutzen trigger guard is available from Track Of The Wolf. I'm building a rifle with this TG. The Gun Works has a nice Schutzen butt plate that is correct for this type of percussion rifle. The boxlock action is available from Pecatonica.

Hey Joe,  I hope you start another thread on this project.   I think it'll deserve one of its own.  I'm considering a project to build a replica myself,  maybe next winter.  It'd be handier to follow it that wade through this one.

what will you use for a butt plate?   Is that guard one of the cast steel ones.   I've wondered about grafting one onto a cut off lever on ruger #3 action.  I saw one a couple years ago I really liked the look of (other than a bad alloy /bluing mismatch that left the ornamental part of the lever rather purple-ish).  However I have wondered about the strength of those cast steel levers---if they could be made hard/tough enough to work a FB cartridge action without bending

I would DW,  but I dont want to ruffle feathers.  There may be others who dont want this sort of subject matter on the ASSRA forum as well. When it's done I'll most likely post it on the ALR forum and the WSU forum.
I hope you dont mind me taking advantage of your thread. My intentions are honest.
Due to the amount of interest in your thread I wanted to post the parts sources.

Yes it's the steel / iron TG. Seems as hard and durable as any other steel. After case hardening or Kasenit it might work with a FB action although the first finger loop is a bit thin. Dont know about the off color when blued. I dont know yet how I'll finish the metal parts.
The butt plate I'm using is from Joe Williams at the Gun Works. I'll post a picture of it soon. It has the flat where the upper prong goes for a fancy turned screw head. The lower prong is long like the American German rifles of the period. Steel also.

Found another nice percussion schutzen Wayne.  This one is by Franz Dischler in Munich. He was active from 1862 to 1874. Dischler was a  member of Biggi's current rifle club.

That was a very common style in Germany Wayne. I like it cuz it's differnt.  One of my Aydts and my Stahl have a similar style.  It fits me better than my Meunier. Not so much drop in this rifle stock.  Checked the twist today. It's 32.

That's a beautiful gun, Joe and the carving on the butt is gorgeous. Will you bring it to Spoken in May?

Do you lay your head and cheek to the side, to align with the sights? Or turn the stock into your face or am I seeing it wrong?

Yes' I'll have it at Spokane.  The only difference in the way the stock feels is, it contacts much more of your cheek. From your cheek bone down almost to the chin.

Projectile update. Been a while since posting here. Have done much experimenting with bullets for these original medium twist Percussion schuetzen rifles. Tried round balls, boring and wind sensitive when shooting past fifty yards.
Tried picket bullets and cloth patches = not bad but not good enough. Flyers. Tried paper Chase patches and two strip paper patches. Pain to load, especially in the wind. Spotty grouping with flyers. Not good enough.  My Dischler rifle measures .377 in the grooves, made a base plug for an old Ideal 375-200-300 mold. Now casts a .38 Minie bullet.  Finally some real accuracy. Bullets weigh over two hundred grains and print to call at 100 yards. A big improvement.

I have not shot my .45 cal for a while,  but I was able to buy one of the old Lee "modern Minnie" moulds in .45.   looks like a huge honk'n hollow-base flat nosed wadcutter.   Lee "tumble lube" and a pea-sized ball of my bees-wax/lanolin lube in the hollow base and it shot really nicely for some casual offhand work shooting at stumps and rocks across a pond, approx 100 yards. never got around to trying it on paper.
