Several years ago I purchase an old stevens ideal scheutzen rifle. When I got it, it had a globe front sight that was slightly smaller than the Lyman 17a with a glass fron sight insert in it with a dot? I would really like to find this same type insert with a "dot" again that would fit the 17a type sight. Anyone have a clue as to where I might find one that would fit.

Traditional rifle rules don't allow the plastic inserts...only metal and glass.  Plastic inserts usually have a hole drilled in the center of them, and occasionally have a contrasting paint around the beveled edge of the hole, to give a "floating" aperture around the bullseye.  A glass insert may be set up the same, or it may have a dot, as is used in some scopes, but the insert would not give any magnification.  Problem right now is that I don't know of anyone making glass inserts.  Heck, even expensive eyeglasses use fancy plastic lenses.   

Ralph, you might want to check with your optician to see if he can grind you an insert out of optically flat glass...if you can find some that would be suitable.  Perhaps a glass microscope slide?  Expect to open up your wallet and bleed, though!
