Winchester High Wall in 30-30

I am looking for input and suggestions on a project that I have been wanting to pursue for several years. A friend and I did some trading and I ended up with a H.W. Special Sporting rifle with a P.G. stock and SST. Everything is in pretty nice condition and it has a Douglas #3 taper round barrel in 38-55. Since I already have 4, 38 caliber rifles and would like to build a 30-30 and this seems to be a likely candidate to use.
I am interested in other shooters experiences with the 30-30. After reading some articles in the CBA publication and Lyman cast bullet manual it seems that 1-12 is the preferred twist rate. Any other opinions on that? Also since it will be used with cast bullets only would another Douglas barrel be a good choice or would a Lilja be money better spent? Recommendations on a mold would also be appreciated.
Let me state that this rifle has already had some work done and that it is not original. At one time the original barrel was removed and whoever did it used a Crescent wrench on the receiver damaging both sides. The damaged area was micro-welded and re-dressed to remove all damage, the complete action was then carefully hand polished and is still in the white. The butt stock has had a cheek piece added, probably in the 30,s or 40's. It was very well done and is secured by two wood screws, obviously for a scope height comb. When it is removed only two small holes remain in the butt stock.
I would very much enjoy having 30 caliber cast bullet rifle and I think this will fit the bill nicely. Suggestions and comments are appreciated.

Singleshotsam, sounds like you have a pretty nice project ahead of you I have a fondness for the 30-30. Think I have 4 of them. A twist of 1x12 would be more than ample for this cartridge. Since you already have a douglas #3 barrel on it why not get the same style and only have minimal fitting to the forend. The 30-30 will show a marked increase in both velocity and power when fired in a barrel longer than 20" I seem to remember an article where velocity was compared between a 20" barreled carbine and a 24" barreled rifle. The 24" barrel won out the contest. However if you plan on shooting cast bullets velocity is what you make out of it. I guessing here that your barrel length will be more than 24" So much the better. Mount a redfield 3200 in 24x on the bbl and your good to go. Frank

Dittos to Singleshotlover's comments.  It sounds like you have a good plan and a great platform to build it on.  You have done the hard part already by acquiring the gun to build on, with no worry about losing originality of a complete piece.  Sounds like a win-win situation to me!  Wink

One of the problems with 30-30 as an accuracy cartridge is the very generous chamber dimensions, and the fact that it's usually encountered in lever action rifles.  Recommended bullets are necessarily flat or blunt ended, the rifles may have excessive headspace, and the lever design isn't noted for accurate work at more than spitting distances.  All that being said, several years ago I barreled a Falling Block Works action for a friend in 30-30 that shot quite well with cast bullets.  Of course, I had a reamer re-ground to minimum diameter dimensions by Manson Precision, and I kept headspace to minimum as well.  As I recall, that rifle had a 12" twist barrel...don't remember who made the blank, though.

There is a shooter using the 30-30 case for hunter class shooting who posts on Benchrest .com .

A search there or post in gunsmithing will give you more information.

My Uberti 12 twist 30/30 Has shot good groups with EVERY cast bullet design and weight.Where I found variation was in bullet diameter. My rifle likes .309. My wesson 12 twist is the same way. Check out the cast bullet forums. The 30/30 is one of the best 30 cal. cast bullet ctgs. Chamber with a tight neck and u can do away with the uselss breechseating. Talk with the people at cut rifling they did a great 7mm barrel for me. My wesson is a take off from a Remington .308 police rifle.
Thats my opinion from a lot of cast bullet shooting.
Good luck

I thought some more about it. Here is my barrel maker choice.
(You need to Login or Register to view media files and links). When u get the chamber cut get a bullet seater made also with the same reamer. Wilson is my choice of loading dies.

I, too, have a Uberti low wall in 30-30, and intial impressions are very good.  Shoots very, very well with GC loads (fixed); next up is to work on PB loads.

Funny it sould be mentioned, because I was just think ing about getting a breech seater made for it, if I can find someone who would do it.

Tom. Dan cut the barrel on my .308/32-20 that, with breechseated 217 gr. bullets, will group under 1/2" at 100 yards all day long...if I do my part!  Excellent workmanship on the barrel.   Smiley

Useless breechseating??  Huh

All three national CBA plain base records are held by shooters who breechseated their bullets to set the records.

Blindeye, I think Tom may just have a screw loose.   Grin Grin Grin

It is still my OPINION a good tight neck chamber will shoot with breach seating. That is why i recomend the bullet seating tool from the chambering reamer. Why mess with something on the bench you dont have to. Load where you are comfortable.I index and match all my brass measuring and weighing it. Everything is dead straight,Concentric when it enters the chamber
As for your records I see that as shooters ability mor than breach seating. A man with the crudest equipt I have ever seen was unbeatable in local matches because he could read conditions.
I sat next to Feris Pindel once when he put five shots through the same hole three bullets loaded backwards. BECAUSE HE COULD DO IT. It was an 1.5-308  before the 6mmppc A CONCENTRIC NECK IS THE HEART OF THE CHAMBER
JUST MY OPINION
