Marlin Ballard with G.H. Tryon stamped on stock

Looking for information about G.H. Tryon.  I have a Ballard #9 which has G.H. Tryon stamped on the buttstock just under the cheekpiece.  Looking for any information about G.H. Tryon and a possible tie to Marlin Ballards.   Thanks

Are you sure its G H Tryon and not G W Tryon? The Tryon family was in the gun business from the flintlock age to the metallic cartridge age. There was a George W SR and JR. Edward K SR and JR. They were located in the city of Philadelphia from 1811 to 1905.

Thnx for the info.....    Yep,  It's G.H. Tryon,  I double-checked after doing some research & finding the G.W. Tryon/Edward Tryon info.   GW was a bit earlier in the timeframe for this gun,   Edward's timing would be a better fit.   I'm not sure it's even a gunmaker/gunsmith or stockmaker's marking,  guess it could be the gunowner had his name stamped on the stock.   It's just plain block letters (perhaps 1/4" tall) stamped under the cheek-piece.   I believe the stock/forearm were refinished at some point in time, probably back in the 30's-40's,  perhaps the stamping is from that period also.   I'm not sure,  still guessing it's a gunsmith from some period.

Hello Joe,
Pictures, probably one at a time due to size.   Front site is a replacement,  I have the original globe site from the previous owner.
Let me know if I've mis-identified.

Thnx,
Howdy

Hello Howdy. Thank you for posting pictures of your stunning #9!  Shocked What a beautiful rifle! The pictures are big but thats okay because they show in detail what Ballard did. Your rifle really sparkles. It looks to be in new condition.  When you said it had been stamped under the cheekplate I assumed it to be a beater. The stamp is done nicely as well. What a surprise. Thanks again for sharing.

With the exception of the stamp it appears to be in minty original condition. I doubt it's had any gunsmithing done to it, but the stamp appears professional, so it's possible it was the stamp of a dealer, or gunsmith/dealer rather than an owner.
That's a gorgeous #9!

I don't know whether it was done (carefully) with single letter stamps or with a specially made stamp, but an ancestor of mine marked the wood of many of his wood working tools with his name using a nearly identical font to the one shown here.  Perhaps somebody in the late 19th century offered such stamps to the trade?  Huh

I knew a local gunsmith years ago who had a device he built to hold stamps. It was adjustable for length and held the stamps in a row so he could assemble the letters he wanted and then group stamp them with all letters lined up. Might be something along those lines?

You can also have one piece name stamps made up like that. I new a couple of guys that had stamps in that same font made up so they could stamp barrels and buttstocks (under the buttplate).
