My new single shot

I'm sorry if this is off topic for this forum, but I built this reproduction 1862 Parrot rifle a couple of months ago and I just wanted to show it off somewhere.  It weighs 620 pounds and is 6' long.  It is not rifled - I just couldn't figure out how to do that with the tools I had available.   I haven't begun the carriage yet so it's just laying on the floor in my machine shed, however it will be a genuine shooter, not just a display piece.   The only thing I did not do myself was to machine the radius on the trunnions where they fit the barrel.  Other than that, it's all my work.  It would take more time than I have to explain how it was built, but it will be safe to shoot I assure you.

     Hey Mr. Powderhead . . . read (Power-Head)

At Creedmoor, we shoot L O N G range and I often thought about stretching the rules a bit to accommodate more distance . . . but you've gone a bit overboard ! !   Wink

By the way, from the background, it looks as if this little project was done on "government time".  ( Did I get that point right ? )

P. S. What did the ATF / Homeland Security folks have to say about it; or haven't you asked ?    Lips Sealed     Embarrassed     Cry

Yes, this was certainly a government job!!  I did this during the last month of my employment with that company.  After 36 years, I retired!!
I always joked that I worked in the "defense department" because of all the other do-dads I built there. I had a great supervisor that let me do what I wanted as long as I got his work done first.
As far as the ATF goes, you don't need their approval for something like this.

Powderhead, as one who sometimes manages to come up with some off topic posts I saw welcome aboard and a fantastic cannon. Bet it was fun trucking that baby home. You may just want to post those pics over on the graybeardoutdoors.com black powder cannon and mortar forum. They will definitely love it. Frank

You have got to figure out how to rifle that gun!  A Parrot needs to shoot conical shot and shell.  Round shot just wouldn't be right.

Maybe I'll try to rifle the next one, but this one's done.  I really don't know what I'll feed it.  I've been told not to shoot lead.  It's too dense and heavy.  I'll find something.  In the mean time I'm looking for some wheels that closely match originals in size.  I've been told to try the Amish buggy makers.  Where ever I find them I expect to pay a lot.  I've been told that they could cost up to $500 per wheel.  Maybe I better try my hand at wheel making!!!

What is the bore diameter?  I have a Lyle Line throw gun that is 2 1/2 inch and take coors beer cans.  A beer can full of cament makes a great hole in targets out past 1000 yard!

Powderhead,
Drop kaintuck a PM. He had his wheels for his cannon made by an Amish fellow, and they were not nearly that much money.

(You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)    Paul Barnett's business is is a great source for all sorts of info and supplies. Studying their catalogue is an education in itself

I also noted a book by Matt Switlick on BP artillery.   Both guys are incredibly knowledgeable.

Paul has been building replacement guns for the National Park Service for years to replace the originals scattered all over the nations battlefields.
He has also done numerous live fire accompaniments with major orchestras performing the 1812 Overture. he has a whole battery of Lyles for that purpose.
Matt has coordinated all sorts of BP artillery live fire events and was the first guy who recreated the Ferguson rifle.  If I recall correctly he also coordinated the live fire and impact recording for the sound effects for "Master and Commander"
Both guys have been expert wittnesses in BP cannon accidents and gave major testimony in Washington when the ATF was trying to shut down private BP ownership some years back.
They are two of the unsung heros of our sports

Hey guys!  Thank you all so much for the nice comments and tips for finding the things I need to go along with my new single shot.  Time and the  weather has gotten away with me, as I had wanted to build a temporary pedestal to mount this thing on out in the front yard.  With all I have going on, I know that it will be awhile before I get it mounted on a real carriage, and it deserves to be displayed somewhere other than my shop floor.  I will post more pictures as I continue to work on it.  Thanks again!

Nice job on the barrel Powderhead. Have you considered a disappearing carriage like the one on my coastal defense gun? You could shoot at the neighbors and they'd never know who did it.  Wink

No no, I keep the breechblock down in the basement. That way nobody can shoot it when I'm not there. Ya have to be responsible with these big guns. Some dummy might lobb one into downtown Victoria BC.  Smiley

VERY COOL Joe, thanks for the tour and for "the rest of the story"

I'll read more from the site tonight.  My question is, who manned those big gun emplacements ?  Was it national guard, regular Army, or Coast Guardsmen ?

There were two 10" disapearing rifles on Grande island off Subic bay in the phillipines circa 1965-66. They were supposed to be transferred to the smithsonian for preservation. Somehow they ended up I believe on the west coast. One of the sponsors at graybeards had taken pics. Well the shrapnel scars looked kinda familiar. Dug out the pics and the scars matched up. Sent copies to one of the sponsors and they matched. small world. Frank

There's something I've always wondered about those 'disappearing' guns. How can anything mounted behind massive concrete and stone abutments that belches 75 foot sheets of flame and smoke clouds as large as a four story house manage to disappear in a convincing manner? Oh Gawd, how I'd love to pull the lanyard on one of  things even if it was loaded with blanks! Yeah, I know, that has profound Freudian implications.  Wink Well sometimes a 16 inch coastal defense gun is just --- a 16 inch coastal defense gun. Roll Eyes

Well when I saw the two I spoke about there was a large pit directly underneath that I believe contained a large counterweight. Recoil forced the barrel back and down below the large concrete wall where they could be reloaded. Counterweight was used to raise barrel into firing position. A lot of this is from memory of what I saw over 40 years ago. A lot of brain cells have gone south since then. The pics I had were posted on graybeardoutdoors.com black powder cannon and mortar forum. Might have to keep scrolling back into old posts but they should still be there. Hope this helps. Frank

What a piece!

As far as ammunition goes you might try to roll your own so to speak.

I've known some fellows over the years who would measure the bore diameter, and make up a cardboard mould and cast their projectile from concrete.

Sounds like cheap easily made ammo to me.

Nice work too by the way!

There were 2   14"  disappearing guns guarding Honolulu harbor.  Constructed in 1911 as Battery Randolph  at  Fort DeRussy on Waikiki  beach, thay were scrapped in 1946.  There is a small but good museum at that location now where one can view the storage rooms for shot and powder.  A smaller 5 or 6" gun remains on display outside.
If someone will post pictures i can email them.  They are of  a scale model of the original disappearing guns at DeRussy.

There is a net site called the CDSG-Coast Defence Study Group, you'll find out what happened to the 14" Rear Turrents of the battleship Arazonia. They were removed, re-built and emplaced in the hills behind P.H..They were finally test-fired two days before the atomic bomb was dropped.Needless to say, they were scrapped in 1946, after the war was over.If you ever wonder why we did so little fighting in WWI, it was because all the army's money was sunk into fixed , heavy guns to defend us.There were 147 artillery units in the us army in 1914, only 17 were field artillery. It's no wonder we bought artillery from the French in WW1.I love them, but  Coast Defence guns are a monunent to Military stupidy.
