Well when I saw the two I spoke about there was a large pit directly underneath that I believe contained a large counterweight. Recoil forced the barrel back and down below the large concrete wall where they could be reloaded. Counterweight was used to raise barrel into firing position. A lot of this is from memory of what I saw over 40 years ago. A lot of brain cells have gone south since then. The pics I had were posted on graybeardoutdoors.com black powder cannon and mortar forum. Might have to keep scrolling back into old posts but they should still be there. Hope this helps. Frank

What a piece!

As far as ammunition goes you might try to roll your own so to speak.

I've known some fellows over the years who would measure the bore diameter, and make up a cardboard mould and cast their projectile from concrete.

Sounds like cheap easily made ammo to me.

Nice work too by the way!

There were 2   14"  disappearing guns guarding Honolulu harbor.  Constructed in 1911 as Battery Randolph  at  Fort DeRussy on Waikiki  beach, thay were scrapped in 1946.  There is a small but good museum at that location now where one can view the storage rooms for shot and powder.  A smaller 5 or 6" gun remains on display outside.
If someone will post pictures i can email them.  They are of  a scale model of the original disappearing guns at DeRussy.

There is a net site called the CDSG-Coast Defence Study Group, you'll find out what happened to the 14" Rear Turrents of the battleship Arazonia. They were removed, re-built and emplaced in the hills behind P.H..They were finally test-fired two days before the atomic bomb was dropped.Needless to say, they were scrapped in 1946, after the war was over.If you ever wonder why we did so little fighting in WWI, it was because all the army's money was sunk into fixed , heavy guns to defend us.There were 147 artillery units in the us army in 1914, only 17 were field artillery. It's no wonder we bought artillery from the French in WW1.I love them, but  Coast Defence guns are a monunent to Military stupidy.

Hindsight is 20/20?  Military stupidity?  Seems a little rash to me. Maybe not.   Huh
